The twentieth century collection is probably of most interest to the non-specialist; my dad was gratified to see a 70s suit of questionable style just like the one he wore to his wedding. Fashion/Textiles/Design students should make the effort to visit as you can get up close to enjoy the detail. We'd already had tea & cake so were too full for the teashop, but there were some nice items for sale in the gift section.

A gem. Beautiful setting and a marvellous collection. All the stewards are charming and the café is perfect. Lovely tea and lovely ladies on duty.
The tableaux are fascinating and present a social as well as a costume view. There is a great variety of types of garments here, not just occasion clothes, but day to day items. And the accessories...bags, hats, fans, scarves...
Some eras have stood the test of time better than others. the yards of white Edwardian lace and broderie anglais would need a maid to keep it fresh...those 20's beads would need strong muscles...but OMG. The purple crushed velvet 1970s hot pants........
