This short break was completely ruined by the lack of soundproofing between the floors of the apartments. As we were in the middle apartment we could clearly hear conversations from both above and below and the noise of the people above walking around was unbearable. Whilst wooden flooring is great for durability and appearance in a holiday rental with no sound insulation it is a terrible choice! All I can say is don't expect to sleep in once the folks in the apartment above are up as it's impossible!
The metal spiral staircase is also a bit of a pain for getting luggage up and down and this also makes enough noise to shake you out of bed if you get some heavy footed folks on it!
The sofa bed is worn and very uncomfortable to sit on - the metal frame is showing through the torn material.
Only 1 toilet roll is provided and the local shops shut early so make sure you nip out and buy some as soon as you arrive
The only plus side really is that the location is great, you can't fault it for that as it's only a minutes walk down to the lovely harbour. The only downside of the location is that there is no car parking at the cottage itself, that is a 5 minute walk away up the hill.
Overall, I believe the best review can be given by asking whether you would stay here again to which I would have to reply "No, never".

The suite was modern, stylishly furnished and extremely comfortable.A minute 's walk from the bustling and lively harbour of Padstow.,it was quiet and peaceful to live in. The kitchen was very well equipped and all appliances were easy to use, particularly the cooker.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who I she's to combine the fun of Padstow with a restful holiday suite.
Padstow is a great location and there was lots to do in the surrounding area. It was very busy as it was August, but we would certainly return. Duke's Retreat was in a great position and I can appreciate that at the start of the season it was probably immaculate. Unfortunately however, the flat wasn't as clean as I would have liked. The bedding didn't feel fresh, there was dust, and the rug in the bedroom was grubby. For the price I was expecting more. However, it was homely and a good base for our break.
Me and my boyfriend stayed her for 3 nights as we were visiting the rick stein cooking school, we could not have chosen a better place to stay, the apartment is finished to a high standard, modern and very spacious and private, literally in the centre of padstow. I would defiantly recommend this to any one going to padstow rather than staying in a old style b&b . We got a great deal on this which made it even better and probably cheaper than a hotel. We will defiantly be back!
My wife and I have stayed in 2 of these units for the past 2 New Years. They are ideally situated, a few minutes walk to the harbour and great restaurants, fitted out to a high spec, comfortably furnished and very quiet. Unloading can be difficult as the entrance is on the main narrow road and parking is also an issue but I parked for £1/day at the car park up the hill just past the church.
Last year we stayed in the 1st floor unit, Dukes Cabin, which was a good size for 2 with a comfortable lounge. This year we were on the 2nd floor, Dukes Retreat, which is smaller and not as comfortable esp if you are over 6 foot tall, with limited dining space but a good view from the window breakfast bar. They are both adequately equipped and we cooked and ate in on a couple of occasions on each visit.
We will hopefully return to Dukes House but would recommend the first floor apartment as it larger and more comfortable
