Very nice staff. My fault as didn't check properly. Nice self catering place for nature lovers and bird watchers but if you are staying one night as part of your of area it is probably too basic and remote from facilities. Tarifa best place to eat is a few Kms away. Avoid Aleciras.

Stayed four nights with a birding group. Being November, there were few other visitors and we had the place much to ourselves.
We stayed in one of the old estate buildings (Casa de Commandante) which had three bedrooms (all with own facilities) and a shared lounge and kitchen. Outside there were plenty of places to sit and relax.
Its all geared for self-catering but being in a group, we had breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. Breakfast was continental style (fruit, yoghurt, bread, cereal, ham and cheese) - with coffee made to order - but, strangely, no eggs! Dinner was three courses and nicely balanced. If self-catering, there are good places to eat a short distance away.
Staff are very friendly and helpful and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and informal. There is a small but secluded pool available in season.
Good base for birdwatching (with plenty to see on the site itself) and professional help is available by arrangement with the centre.

Obviously a major plus for birders and a wonderful place for nature lovers generally. This review describes a different experience.

It is good to read the enthusiastic reviews of Huerta Grande as it suggests that most of the time guests have a great time there. Not for us though. We booked a night's accommodation as part of a walk across Andalucia leaving for Tarifa early the next day. Our greeting at Reception was more or less non-existent and the person who showed us our cabin could clearly not care less.

Cabin is fine, although massive bed in bedroom makes it hard to move around. Well equipped. WIFI works only at reception (and then indifferently).

Apparently no food is available (although other reviewers write of BBQs etc) and the Reception which serves coffee does not open until after 9.30am Not very handy for an early start. Accepting that the cabins are fully equipped and with notice food could be brought in (no shops in Pelayo) one night stayers are likely to want something from a restaurant. Luckily there are several options along the N340 main road. If you are backpacking cooking in the cabin is not really an option.

Notwithstanding the other reviews our impression of Huerte Grande on the day we arrived was that while the concept was good some interest in providing hospitality had drained away. Long-stay groups seem to have a better experience

Blessed with the opportunity to visit the Straits again, and witness the spectacular migration miracle, September 8th thru to the 29th 2017 has been superb.

The birdwatching has been stupendous !

From sublime tranquility at La Janda, observing Montagu's Harrier quartering the paddy fields, Black Winged Kite hovering, and Red Necked Nightjar sweeping and wheeling, in flight at dusk.

To an electric atmosphere, with excitement in the air, at Cazalla and Algarobbo observation points, scanning thru thousands of the Raptor parades ''Usual Suspects '' such as Black Kite, Honey Buzzard, Egyptian Vulture, Short Toed and Booted Eagle,
seeking to enjoy gems that included Ruppell's Vulture ( A total of 10 ) Long-Legged Buzzard, Red Kite, Spanish Imperial, Bonelli's and Golden Eagle.

Many thanks To '' Fundacion Migres '' Alejandro Onrubia, and all of their observers crew, including Carlos, Marina, Javi, Manu and Diego, your ornithological work is so precious, your generosity in sharing knowledge and indeed the birds, with fellow bird lovers, is outstanding and very much appreciated.

A perfect way to end this trip, I stayed again at ''Huerta Grande'', as ever, a safe harbour, and peaceful haven, a bird news hub where Tawny Owls serenade, insuring sweet dreams.

And home to ''Inglorious Bustards'' guides Simon and Niki who eat, sleep, breathe the Natural World - All birds shared, gratefully appreciated IB's - from Wilson's Petrel and
Scopoli's Shearwater to an exaltation of Short Toed Lark.

At La Janda, a Short Toed Snake Eagle, parked ( Just 20 meters ) from my truck.
We shared 15 glorious minutes together, while I admired this majestic beauty thru my binoculars.

And when it flew, I knew it was my cue, the time to tear myself away from this birdwatching mecca and head home, with quarrels of Spanish Sparrow in my rear view mirror....

.......'Till the next time !

Gracias to Katrina and the HG team !

Hasta Luego...

A great place to stay. Friendly and helpful Katrin is a great hostess, nothing is too much trouble.
The food was excellent and an nice touch was having wine chosen by the chef to match to the food.
The cabins in the woods are for self catering when there aren't groups staying at the hotel. They are well stocked with equipment including fridge, microwave and a couple of rings.
We will return in the future.
