We were suppose to have gotten the Kviknes hotel but some last minute hiccup took us into the Loenfjord. All the group's initial grumblings about missing out on our original accommodation soon evaporated when we got here. The hotel is not ultra modern by design, rather classic chalet like. But it is surrounded absolutely by beautiful landscape. It is in a sort of valley and around it are high peaks, some snow capped. There is a lovely white water river that skips the rocks and gurgles to a wider lake that eventually meets the waters of the fjords, I suppose. It is visually very pleasant-lots of green, manicured lawns. The air is absolutely crisp and purified. The rooms are generous. Beautifully white and fresh bed linen. Cheerful color scheme and a spacious bathroom. Ours was on the ground floor, past reception. The windows open to view of the river just where it breaks over the rocks! It is quiet, surrounded by some residential units. There is a chair lift ride within walking distance of the hotel. It takes you up one of the highest view point where you can, if you are so inclined, indulge in some serious outdoor activities. Conveniently located across the road is a local store for snacks and knick-knacks. It's a biitt of a drive from where one disembark off the fjord cruise but I promise you, it is worth it. It is peaceful and tranquil and a great place to spend a couple of nights before one continue on one's onward journey.

Room Tip: The rooms that face the river is wonderful.

Stayed in the what appeared to be brand new apartments which are about 700m from the main hotel. £160 for one night. Two burner hob, no oven or microwave. Spacious and spotlessly clean apartment. No TV or Internet and under Norwegian licensing laws the hotel were not allowed to sell us a bottle of wine for consumption out with the main building. Shame! Supermarket opposite the hotel sells beers up to the usual 5%. Went to the hotel for a few drinks and the staff were great, very friendly and efficient. However the usual high Norwegian prices apply £8 a pint £8.80 a whisky! Sad!

Basicly this is a nice hotel, in a spectacular part of the country. The mother hotel across the road - hotel Alexandra - has a long history of hospitality, quality, abundance and service, especially when it comes to 'wining and dining'.
We were very suprised to experience that this is not at all the case for Hotel Loenfjord.
The evening buffet we had here was no less than embarrassing, compared to what one should be allowed to expect from a hotel of this category (it is not cheap). Frozen vegetables, an overall scarceness both i volume and in variety reminded us more of a truck-stop buffee than of a 4 star hotel.
Nevertheless the hotel was crowding with tourists from all over the world.
And of course there are a lot more to consider when you travel than just the food.
For us however food means so much for a memorable holiday that we are not able to recommend dining here for those who think likewise.

Stayed only one night enroute south
The fjord view room was very good but situated on the main road which meant an early wake up by the trucks
Dinner buffet was varied and plentiful but standard not great
More appealing to feeding large tour groups
Only reason I gave it 3 stars is that the front desk service was very good
Not recommended for couples

We spent only one night here during an organized tour and it was the most beautiful, charming place I have every stayed before. If you have luck and you get a room facing the river, you will understand what I mean :-) It is really a special place, strongly recommended.
