A short drive from Holbrook, where we stayed, the Meteor Crater is located a short distance off Route 40. It is an easy walk, with a guide, where you can see into the crater from 3 different viewing points. You cannot climb into the crater. Discovery center has all kinds of displays, some about other craters and meteor strikes. The admission is a bit steep: $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, but we felt it was well worth it to see something this unique and large scale.

Our daughter rounded the corner of the observatory deck, expecting it to be another staring at rocks excursion. Instead she gasped, hitched a breath and said "Oh my God!" She was staring out at the 50000 year old impact crater.

Friendly staff and easy to get to and park. There is plenty of room to get the best shots, I loved this and so glad we went. They do have a Subway on premises for eating. The observatory is undergoing additions and renovations so bear with them.

They have a top notch science floor dedicated to space threats and previous impacts as well as the history of the site and how it came to be. Colorful and interactive displays had our daughter's attention after a school year of hating her space unit in class.

All of this is followed up by a stellar gift store that offers more than the usual cheap crap at outrageous prices. Genuine fossils, pieces of the actual meteor and other really great gift items populate a beautiful store.

Do not miss this on your trip, it's a fantastic stop and major props to the management and staff.

Unlike the Amboy crater that requires a half hour at least to hike into, the Barringer crater can be easily accessed and is much larger. The scale of the crater is astounding. Besides the crater, there are other exhibits to be seen indoors

We stopped by on our way from Flagstaff to Petrified Forest with kids ages 17, 11 and 5. They all (as did we the parents) really enjoyed our stop. Parking was easy, lots of signs so we never felt lost despite it is out in the middle of no where, staff was very nice and exhibits were very hands on which the kids loved! We spent about an hour looking at the exhibits and the crater.
