We recently ate our farewell dinner at Kamui Japanese Restaurant (formerly Oriental Stand) in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala (across the street from Cafe Las Cristalinas, 50 Meters Up Hill From Panajachel Dock). It is owned and run by Mayumi, a vivacious and friendly woman, who learned the art of making sushi and other Japanese delectables in her home country. The restaurant is very clean and small with only a few tables inside. There is also an open air outside dining area where you can sometimes sit and listen to musicians play pleasing (not too loud) music. The food was carefully prepared, beautifully presented and delicious. I ordered Tempura rolls - fabulous. Others ordered the salmon poke with avocado and rice which was also declared “the best”! The owner is extremely conscientious when sourcing the food she uses. She makes her own tofu, Kim Chi and pickled ginger and uses only pure water with which she cleans and cooks the food, so there is no worry whether or not it is safe to eat. It was a fitting last meal in Guatemala. You’re missing out if you don’t stop here!
