What a lovely place to visit just off the road between Dominical and Uvita. Best to make an appointment but it is worth it - a small rehab and release centre for a wide range of hapless local residents - it’s a really nice way to get up close to a sloth, spider monkey, toucan or the really rare Panama owl monkey and hear their stories. Good education, nice personal small friendly tours and certainly a feeling that you’re contributing that essential part back to something worthy and so important in the area.

Amazing people and amazing animals. They are not a zoo that captures animals for the amusement of people but are reather a place that rehabilitates animals and releases them back to the wild if possible. But if it is not possible they help the give the animals the most natural and clean environment to live. 100% worth the drive and would suggest it to my friends.

What a wonderful place! Listen to the heart wrenching stories and meet the warm hearted folks mending these beautiful creatures! Florian was an entertaining and wonderful guide. They’re doing amazing work here and could use your donations from your entry fee or from your Amazon Smile purchases! You’ll feel good that you did!

We are a family of four. We have a 10 and 14 year old. This is a sanctuary that is close by a hotel that has amazing views of the ocean. You park in the hotel parking lot and you have the option to pay by credit card for your tickets. We did not have a reservation and showed up at 9 o’clock and was told that was not a problem. While you wait for your guide you can use the restroom and enjoy the views. The sanctuary has several sloths, monkeys and lots of birds. They did have a few other animals but I can’t remember what they were called. We all loved it. We learned a lot about the animals. Our favorites were the sloths! Many of the animals will never leave because they wouldn’t survive on their own. The others are being rehabilitated. We really enjoyed it.

Our guide Neil was lovely and so knowledgeable on all of the animals. It is really amazing what they do at Alturas. The animals are simply there for rehabilitation unless they are unable to be released back into the wild. They follow the proper protocols to ensure the animal is put first. And the sloths were adorable! Would totally recommend this tour to all animal lovers.
