“A happily ever after affair ”
Reviewed 18 April 2017 via mobile

My boyfriend & I arrived in Stellenbosch just after lunch with crystal blue skies and warm sunshine. We decided to find a winery near by that would serve a picnic so we could make the most of the day.

Even after reading some previous reviews here, we hadn't expected the experience we had. Yes the setting is divine & the wine delicious but the guide who took us through the wine tasting made it for us. Her passion, story telling (the legend of the Warwick Wedding Cup was told like a Disney movie) & knowledge of the estate when I asked was brilliant & contagious.

Followed by a sublime picnic with the right choices of dishes and perfect amount of food just completed our wonderful afternoon.

Coming from Melbourne where it's all about food & wine and we're proud of that, along with our surrounding wine regions, I think we could learn a thing or two from Warwick Estate who have left a big impression on us.

“FOOD POISONING - AVOID”
Reviewed 17 April 2017 via mobile

We visited Warwick as a couple on Tuesday 11th April around 2pm after wine tasting at a couple of estates.

We ordered the picnic hamper for two for R500. We sat outside and were quickly brought the hamper.

When it arrived, I mentioned to my partner that the food was all room temperature (it was a warm and sunny day), and was neither chilled nor hot.

Sadly, we were not concerned enough to send it back as we assumed that this Estate should have adequate food hygiene procedures. So we ate the food (beef and salmon), and I started suffering symptoms that evening and my partner the next morning.

We had eaten nothing that day apart from Cheerios, and due to the ample size of the picnic, ate nothing else that day.

We have both unfortunately been suffering with food poisoning for a week now, which has significantly affected our 10 day holiday in Cape Town (from the UK). I have suffered from dehydration due to the food poisoning and it really has negatively impacted on our holiday.

Avoid this place if you wish to maintain your gut health.

Dear Beth S,

I am very sorry that you fell ill during your visit to South Africa.

We read your review this morning with great concern and immediately investigated what might have caused you and your partner to feel sick for 10 days. We also phoned our guests who visited us for a picnic on the same day and verified that the employees are following all necessary precautionary health and safety procedures. We view food poisoning very seriously and have multiple checks in place when prepping the picnic food, packaging and final picnic basket construction.

The feedback we received from the guests we had confirmed bookings for, thus not walk in guests, said they did not experience any food poisoning symptoms.
However this was not good enough and we relooked our procedures, the following was followed:
• Our produce does not last longer than two days in the fridge, all dated when it is made.
• All of the chefs wear gloves during food prep and packaging.
• Chefs have to sanitise their hands, up to their elbows, every time they leave the kitchen and when they come back into the kitchen.
• When the boxes are folded, the employees have to wear gloves as well and it is packed in large boxes until used.
• After the picnic boxes have been constructed to the point where it is ready to be ordered, it is safely packed in an air conditioned room.

Even though these procedures have been followed Chef and myself was still not comfortable that we investigated all the areas of concern. Coincidently we received a phone call from a neighbouring farm’s chef this morning who had a food poisoning complaint from a 16 seater visiting the Estate. After the chef did her investigation she submitted their bought-in ice for testing which came back as positive for E-coli. Even though we have an ice machine, we also buy in ice to keep up with volume demand.

You mentioned in your review that you had food poisoning for 10 days. I did research this morning to find out which contaminated ingredients can result in such a long period of not feeling well. The three items where unpasteurized milk, poultry and drinking water. Seeing we do not have the first two in our basket and along with the unfortunate contaminated ice situation at a neighbouring farm, we submitted ice from our machine as well as our bought-in ice for testing, we will receive the results in three days.

I would like to discuss this matter together with the ice results further on personal email, kindly email me at jani@warwickwine.com

“Charming ”
Reviewed 17 April 2017 via mobile

Beautiful, Serene and Rustic... If you're looking for authenticity without the modern glitz then Warwick is the place for you. Of course there's the snarky tale of the chalice and love conquering all accompanying the wine tasting; this adds to the old worldly charm of the establishment. Loved it.

“Fantastic experience ”
Reviewed 17 April 2017 via mobile

Had an absolutely amazing day at Warwick courtesy of a prize won several months back. The day started with a Big 5 vineyard tour which was surprisingly really good. Our guide Soka was incredibly informative and full of endless factoids about winemaking and the vineyards. The Executive wine tasting was delicious and equally informative. But the highlight was the picnic which is without a doubt the best spread I have had at any wine estate. The selection included rustic bread, tender salmon and caper salad, pulled beef, quinoa salad, pates, cheese and individual pots of cheesecake. Beautiful lawns for lazing on and a comfy pod to sit in when we ate. A perfect day.

“Picnic was the best! ”
Reviewed 12 April 2017 via mobile

We booked a picnic in advance, as it fills up real quick. Loved the enormous selection of dishes, all were delicious. The wines were great too. But the best part is just relaxing on a bunch of pillows and enjoying the view and the weather. Highly recommended!
