Visited for first time with close family. Absolute gem and can not believe we have not been before.

Service is very good and staff are very accommodating.

Food is tasty, not over priced and portions are good.

Great ambience with incredible scenery all around.

Highly recommended.

Celebrated my wife's crown birthday at the beautiful venue. Was very impressed with the service. Carmen the Hostess went out of her way to make the occasion very special. Pizzas and platters are tasty and reasonably priced. Will definitely be back!

The original brain food of early humans was marrow bone. It was the soft treasure we wanted and which trained our hands to use rocks for crushing work.

At Mont Marie something spectacular is being done with that. Chef Pieter Vlok takes a large marrow bone, cut along its length, and delivers it with garlic, fresh cream and, like a Stellenbosch Heston Blumenthal, he sprinkles it with delicious snails. A wonderful combination. Heston Blumenthal might have made his name with snail porridge but, Heston, eat your heart out. Pieter Vlok’s marrow and snails dish is a triumph. (See my photograph.)

Another ancient dish of Mont Marie that I like is the “skilpadjie”, translated as “little tortoise”. For the information of foreign diners, you will not eat an actual small tortoise but a traditional South African delicacy of lamb’s liver rolled in kidney membrane and bacon with spices. A similar dish to “skilpadjies” was actually also eaten in ancient Rome. At Mont Marie it is accompanied by baby onion, carrot purée, pickled mushrooms and pomme purée.

I enjoyed the pork belly which, like the bacon in “skilpadjies” might be on your religious or traditional no-no list. If that is the case, the the lamb shoulder, the venison loin, beef fillet steak and line fish are beautifully prepared. I tasted the lamb shoulder. Perfection.

Pieter’s starters and desserts are works of art.

Our table was close to a roaring fire and on a cold evening very cosy. In fact we felt so warmed that we ended with a soufflé served with his home-made coffee ice cream.

Mont Marie should be on everyone’s to-do list with its spectacular mountain views by day, its cosy fireplace for winter evenings and on summer nights cool breezes through open sliding doors.

I found the staff very attentive, the Mont Marie Reserve red wine made on-site outstanding and the value for money very attractive. Top quality at the price.

I always love it there. In fact, I love it so much that I hosted a dinner for 90 people there in January this year. It was pure class.

One of the best restaurants in the Western Cape.

Beautiful surroundings. Food was excellent. Service a bit slow but friendly. Only negative is that the bathroom was not as clean and neat as it should be.
