We included Oudtshoorn on our itinerary for South Africa purely for the meerkat adventure trip. We were not disappointed. The early start is absolutely worth it and watching the sunrise as you wait for the meerkats is wonderful. We arrived at the meeting point at 4.50am and were greeted by Rudolph and JD. We then followed them for a few minutes in our car where we were given a hot drink and biscuit. The group was split into two and we were given our camping chairs. After a short walk we sat down to wait for the first meerkat which took about 15 minutes. Rudolph gave us lots of information on the meerkats and was very knowledgeable. The guides have years of experience working in various places with animals and aren't just knowledgeable about meerkats. The meerkats pleasured us with the presence for about 30 minutes. Allowing us to take lots of wonderful pictures. The way the guides have got the meerkats used to humans without interfering with their normal behaviour is fantastic. They do not feed them or do anything unethical in any way and they have put a lot of time and effort in which doesn't go unnoticed. Each evening they go back to watch where the meerkats are going to settle for the night, which can be one of numerous places, to ensure they know where to take guests the next morning. We aren't a fan of zoos and other such places and felt very comfortable with the whole experience of seeing the meerkats in their natural habitat. An absolute must!

This was an excellent experience from start to finish. 5am is definitely an early start whilst on holiday but it is 100% worth it.

Watching the meerkats is enchanting. They slowly emerge from their burrows and then begin their morning ritual of warming up in the sun, playing with each other and doing some foraging near by. All of this takes place within 10-15 metres of where you are sitting.

The guides have clearly put a huge amount of time, effort and care into these tours so that guests get as positive an experience as possible without causing too much disruption to the meerkat’s lives. These are genuinely wild meerkats so they won’t come out to a strict timetable but whatever time you get with them will be very memorable!

Thoroughly recommended

I have seen some reviews left for Meerkat Adventures under the Meerkat Magic name. These are two different companies.

Our experience with Meerkat Adventures was fantastic from start to finish. We stayed at De Zeekoe Guest Farm who made our bookings and gave us the details for the morning tour. Our travel agent requested the Meerkat Adventure booking as soon as she booked our room at De Zeekoe as it is a popular tour. De Zeekoe guests receive a 100 rand discount on the 600 rand price and have the chance to pay at De Zeekoe and take a voucher along on the tour or pay cash on the day.

We had been given clear directions and a time to meet by the De Zeekoe receptionist and at 5.20am everyone had arrived at the meeting place. Rudolf and JD, who were taking the tour, introduced themselves and then we all followed in convoy to the land where we would view the meerkats. We were given an introductory talk about the meerkats and our viewing etiquette over coffee and rusks and then we each carried a folding chair and sat in a semi circle about 10m away from the burrow. JD and Rudolf were very knowledgable about the meerkats and the other wildlife on the land. They explained how the meerkats had been gradually habituated to humans over an 18 month period so that, as long as we made no sudden movements, the sight of us and the sound of our voices did not bother them.

Wild animals do not follow a timetable but we didn’t have to wait long before the first ‘sentry’ appeared from the burrow. Once it was considered safe the other seven family members appeared.

To watch wild meerkats was amazing and such a privilege. After about an hour of warming themselves in the sun we were able to follow them for a while and watch them start to forage.

We were back at De Zeekoe for breakfast by 8.40am.

This struck me as an ethical and very well organised tour and was one of the highlights of our South African holiday. Take binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens.

We booked the tour well in advance as a friend recommended it to us. And it was a great recommendation.
After enjoying the sunrise in the little karoo we only had to wait a few minutes until the meerkats appeared. It was lovely to see these little animals. Without the help of the guides which check where the meerkat go to sleep the evening before you would not have a chance to find this amazing creatures.

After doing some research in advance, we felt this tour would be a really authentic experience and we weren't disappointed. You need to book in advance although we didn't pay until the day. Our host checked with the owner Devey the day before to find out the time of the rendezvous which is just outside Oudtshoorn at the junction of the road to Mossel Bay. We arrived there at 5.30am and 15 minutes later we followed the tour guide in convoy to the viewing area where we had coffee and biscuits. There were about 34 and we split into two groups - our group stayed put and the others went to another viewing area. Our guides explained that there were several Meerkat families in the territory with many burrows and the meerkats choose a different one most nights so the guides go out the evening before and watch which burrows they go in so they know where to take us in the morning. We watched the sun rise as we carried our camp chairs about 500 metres then set them up in a semicircle to wait. Our guide told us a bit about the meerkats lives and explained that would ignore us if we sat quietly and didn't make sudden movements but they weren't bothered by quiet voices or camera shutters. There is no telling how long you have to wait but luckily after 10 minutes the first little head popped up and for the next half hour we were treated to a lovely view of the family of 7 (3 adults (one very pregnant)and 4 babies) taking a sunbathe and grooming each other, and the babies frolicking. We took lots of photos- I wanted to take some on my phone but it wasn't up to the job as the meerkats blended in with the background, until I put the lens up against the eyepiece of my binoculars- after a bit of cropping it looked ok! Then they all bounded off together on a hunting expedition. The guides collected our money - most paid cash but you can pay be credit card. And we were back as our guesthouse for breakfast by 8.30am. A truly magical experience - a bit pricey but worth every penny!
