Another incredible stay at Boesmanskop!

Review of Boesmanskop
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 05 Apr 2019
We returned for 4 nights this year - maybe a whole week in 2020?! Total relaxation in Tinnie's bit of paradise at Boesmanskop. Spoilt with Tinnie's outstanding cuisine every night with equally fantastic healthy breakfasts, we never ate lunch during our stay! This is the Holy Grail of rural South African hospitality in a stunning location. The enormous room above the billiard room is one of the most beautiful I have ever been lucky enough to stay in - huge comfortable bed with exquisite white bedlinen, elegant antique furniture and a beautiful bathroom. Thank you for another great stay Tinnie!

If you can find an excuse to stay here.... go! The accommodation is spacious provance inspired with a South African twist. Tinnie is the perfect host.... not intrusive but extremely helpful.
The food I can rave about for weeks. We paid R 800 per person for dinner bed and breakfast. I would pay that for the four course meal alone. Even if you dont eat desert and he offers you the pekan pie.... eat it.... it is worth every calory!
We visited in August so it was dry but the road from Calitzdorp (turn left into Calitz street and just keep going) if you come from Cape Town is worth the extra 20min. Watch for the farm right next to the road on the left as it is not very well marked from the Calitzdorp side.

We didn’t want to leave Tinnie (our host) & Boesmanskop. We wish 2 nights had been 5! It is paradise for the traveller who likes total peace and quiet, stunning views & being away from all life’s demands (no WiFi to speak of). Exquisite taste prevails throughout, Tinnie’s eye for antiques & style, not to mention his amazing culinary skills which produced a 4 course meal both nights under the stars with amazing views of the Swartberg mountains as the back drop. The loft bedroom was the biggest & most tasteful room we have ever stayed in, right down to the beautiful cotton sheets. I had a hunch about this place from the Greenwood Guide description, as it sounded so remote & peaceful but it was even better than we had hoped for. We will definitely go back next year!

Room tip: Loft room for couples. Downstairs room for families

On leaving Boesmanskop we felt utterly spoilt! Our charming host, Tinnie, was most attentive and prepared a 5-star 4-course meal worth driving from anywhere to enjoy - an absolute added bonus to the beautiful room that welcomed us. Outdoors is rustic and the contrast on walking into our loft room (more like an apartment) we had just an added experience. Quality comfy bed with the best of linen, generours blankets, lots of space, luxury bathroom, and plenty of towels. Do order dinner and breakfast - it is well worth it! This guest-farm is situated in the Groenfontein Valley which one should allow time for to explore. Nice walk on the farm and spectacular sunset over the mountain (farm is on the foot of it)

Room tip: Loved the loft room we had!

We absolutely loved our stay at Boesmanskop - it exceeded our expectations at every level from start to finish. We arrived late on Saturday evening and were greeted warmly by the owner Tinie, the property has been in his family for three generations. We walked ourselves up to the loft room which was decorated thoughtfully and with an understated luxury. It won't be to everyone's taste, especially if you like shiny minimalism, but if you value rich antiques, quality furnishings, one-off pieces, a gorgeous colour palette then you'll love it.

There was a mix-up with the travel agent so dinner was not ordered in advance but Tinie was happy to accommodate us. We thought this meant he'd quickly knock something together with the contents of his fridge. Little did we know we would be treated to a gourmet four course meal rivalling any we've had on the Western Cape. Breakfast was equally wonderfully with the added bonus of a spectacular mountain view under an ancient wisteria tree.

Tinie was a phenomenal host - warm and attentive without ever being intrusive. His home was totally open to us while maintaining clear boundaries. We had a lovely chat with him after dinner and though we're not animal people we came to like very much the dogs Lana and Sebastian.

We loved it so much we're treating our friends to a night there. As another reviewer has said, there are a couple of reviewers that seemed not to 'get it.' There is a long dirt road to get there but with some of the most amazing views - I'm surprised anyone doing that route would be surprised by the rough and tumble that comes with such a journey. It is remote - it's a farm in a mountain region - so come prepared for that. Enjoy. It's amazing

It is clear from one or two other reviews that this isn't everyone's cup of tea but we absolutely loved it. It IS remote - it's a fairly isolated farmstead, 20 kms along a gravel road. But its location is stunning. It sits in the foothills of the Swartberg range of mountains and from our window we looked out over vineyards, dappled by African sunlight, towards them (see picture). You really couldn't find a more idyllic and tranquil scene - grand, beautiful and peaceful. We had the larger room, which is extremely charming and comfortable - I'd call it modern rustic chic. The extensive garden - also rather rustic chic - provides lots of interest and lovely walks. Tienie's food has already been justifiably praised. My only regret is that we'd only allowed one night here. I'd have loved to stay two or three more.
