I have to applaud the designer and architect that built this lovely boutique hotel around the shell and workings of an old power station. They have done a fantastic job, with many of the original workings still in situ.

Quirky and industrial it might be it the rooms are spacious, well equipped and spotless.

The staff are very friendly, the breakfast is good with plenty of choice, and the bar is very pleasant.

The whole atmosphere is very good and the hotel is well placed just a short walk / drive from the main Waterfront but with a couple of restaurants just across the road.

Two minor niggles, a room key that had to be re-set every day (think that was just ours) and a TV that had a mind of it's own coming on and scrolling through the channels when it wanted (annoying at Midnight). I suspect the remote in the next room may have been responsible but I left it with the staff to sort out.

That said, we will definitely stay there again next time we are in Knysna.

Having first passed the doors of the hotel shortly after it opened in 2010 on my first trip from the UK I finally got to stay there.

The room although not big, was exquisitely decorated. Every thoughtful detail you would expect and a little more from a hotel of that calibre. From the telescope to be able to view the stars from our very private balcony, to the fresh lemon to have with your G & T, they've thought of everything. Highly recommended to anyone that likes something a little out of the ordinary.

This hotel was used by APT and we found it to be a complete surprise. As the name suggests it used to be a Turbine station and much of the machinery is still there and used as a feature in all rooms. Just off the reception is a glass floor with pumps and pipes below. In the restaurant are more blasts from the past between which they have tables for breakfast or dinner. In the rooms there are fuses mounted on cupboard doors and stop-start stations on the wall. More importantly they have incredible coffee. The hotel is beside a canal and has a few shops and restaurants outside the door. Cocktail prices are standard for South Africa, cheap, and all the staff are so friendly. If you are in Knysna this quirky hotel is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Have a coffee on the deck, its worth it.

Unfortunately we arrived at the hotel in the dark, and were grateful to be shown to our room, the Canal Suite which is across the road above the Col C’acchio pizzeria. The room was fantastic, with a small kitchenette and full size fridge, plus a lounge area and large bathroom, along with a small terrace, meaning that we had plenty of space in which to relax during our 5 night stay. In the reception there were several notices about helping to conserve water, but the housekeeping team insisted on changing the towels each day despite us hanging them on the rail, which I found a bit odd.

Breakfast each day offered a choice from the buffet along with a menu of cooked options. We also ate in the hotel on two nights and found the food good overall. The restaurant is quite casual so it’s more functional dining than for a special occasion. The staff in the restaurant and indeed throughout the hotel were always friendly and courteous. One of the ladies serving breakfast even commented that she had missed us the previous day (we had gone out early) but it’s touches like that which made us feel valued. We had a drink at the bar on one evening and the barman was really friendly, even though he unfortunately didn’t seem to have a clue about how to make some of the cocktails on the list! We should have stuck to the couple of craft beers that we had drunk on a previous evening which were excellent!

We both had a spa treatment on one afternoon and again the staff were really friendly and the therapists obviously trained to a high standard. My only criticism here was that we felt pressurised to buy a couple of products after the treatment.

Overall, the hotel is a great base for exploring the Garden Route. Being on Thesen Island, it’s away from the main town so feels very safe to walk around to the nearby shops and restaurants.

Been here two nights
Food is very good and interesting building and concept
Bar is quirky and overall the staff are freindly

Accepting it is a bijou hotel still doesn't let it off with the rooms being variable
We had room110 and no room to swing a cat as they say
Others had suites which were OK
No views from the rooms we used but I believe there may be some with marina views
Rooms make this not a 5star hotel
