Visited as part of our drive along the garden route.

Bit disappointed given previous reviews set expectations high. The food was ok although the sauces overpowered the fish (sole) which was a shame as this could have been excellent if not so rich.

Paper napkins and dodgy tables did not help with the overall impression although the staff were very good.

Would suggest if you want fish go to the Fishermans cottage.

We had wandered around Hermanus looking for somewhere to eat and when I saw the board outside with the menu, it spoke for itself. Whilst the hours indicated it was open during the afternoon, when we tried to book for the evening, the restaurant was closed. We were therefore lucky when we went later in evening to get a table for four. To say the place was busy is an understatement, the service was sooooo slow. However, the food was glorious. Two starters, ostrich carpaccio and calamari, four mains, two grilled ostrich, one springbok curry and a chicken dish. We sat down at 7:41 and got bill at 9:44. Had we visited at 9pm, then the place was emptying and service would probably have been better. The food was exceptional and as we were on holiday, the service as such could be ignored as it was only slow.

If the food we ate was the norm, you can fully understand why the place was busy and probably why the service was slow. It's probably not a good excuse, but with the expectation that it may be a long evening, you won't get indigestion due to eating fast and you can enjoy the experience and the wine.

Recommended? Absolutely. This was a wonderful meal and the rating is fully deserved.

We returned to La Pentola nine months after our last visit, which was the BEST meal we have had in SA.

When you've had such a great meal, returning and getting the same quality, especially as this time we came with my in-laws, was an unknown.
We had built it up as such and were concerned " rose tinted spectacles" were in play.

We shouldn't have worried.

It was buzzing, though there was a wait if you hadn't booked.

Our waitress, Mona Lisa ( yup! Really ), was attentive yet discreet.
Good suggestions for wine pairing and accommodating again to our slight diet restrictions.
I could describe our individual meals but my real advice, is to book a table and try it for yourselves.
Well done to everyone.
Thank you so much for a wonderful evening.

Our only problem now is how to factor in a meal there, each time we return to SA.

We'll be back in February. Somehow.

A popular restaurant on the Hermanus Seafront, with a welcoming and pleasant atmosphere. It is advisable to book and ask for a table at the window – the view across Walker Bay is memorable.
The menu offers an excellent selection of dishes, many of them with an distinctly Italian flavour. The two-course summer-time lunch menu can definitely be recommended. A nice selection of dishes are offered and we settled for the chicken livers in filo-cups as starters and chicken breasts with blue berries as the mains. The dishes were very tasty and very well presented. A nice touch was the complimentary little sorbets after the meal.

We enjoyed freshly cooked seafood and excellent wine. Staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant is in a good location and very accessible from the seafront
