“A visual feast - sadly not quite matched by the quality of food and service on a busy night”
Review of The Stack

The Stack
Ranked #89 of 1 226 Restaurants in Cape Town Central
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$8 - US$16
Description: Frequented by people that you would want to know, the stately Leinster Hall has been brilliantly reimagined and repurposed as The Stack: With an opulent public bar and brasserie downstairs and a unique private members' club upstairs, it's the perfect place to get your swagger on. The fledgling idea of hotelier Nigel Pace and his designer wife, Sarah Ord, this one of a kind establishment is about to make the Kloof Street hood even cooler, if that is even vaguely imaginable. Between them, they have over 25 years of experience making people feel at home so you'd be foolish not to get in on the ground floor, so to speak.

Gorgeous eclectic decor has really freshened up this beautiful old building and visiting the members upstairs area is reason enough to go to this welcome new spot. Malachite and jewel colours with leopard print and big doses of Afro chic make for a vibrant and convivial environment for an evening out. Very friendly staff and management greet you, cocktails are fab, and there's a great buzzy atmosphere.

Unfortunately, possibly due to a busy Friday night, the service was very inconsistent and some of our table's food was disappointingly lack lustre. We were rushed down to our table from starting drinks but menu's were not offered until long after we were seated and were asked to select our wine. The onion soup was bland, starter salad for the vegetarian very uninspiring, the beef bourguignon was fatty and far from a robust cassoulet, and the chocolate pear dessert was a meagre sliver of rock hard pear with 3 tiny blobs of chocolate. Food for the table was not presented at the same time and there was some confusion finding our things when we asked for our coats to be returned to us when leaving. Hopefully teething / training problems will be resolved as things get busier as the place is going to be very popular. Some of the other food for our table, like the gravadlax and steak (presented in cute small copper pans), looked lovely and was pronounced great.

I look forward to going back, perhaps for lunch, and hope to enjoy the promise of a meal more in line with our expectations from other reviews and the glamourous setting!

Take time to look at everything - it has been beautifully decorated. The staff even dress to impress with cute colourful outfits. I popped in for lunch, but will be back for dinner very soon. The food was delicious, and the service fantastic. The bar staff serve up a mean cocktail. One could easily sit next the the fire place by the bar on a rainy sunday and enjoy a bottle of wine (or two). its a really special place.

Freindly, Hospitable management team.

The wine list is great and the prices of these wines are surprisingly reasonable.
The food is delicious and well presented.
The hostesses great you on arrival and their waiting area is a warm and freindly enviroment the staff are just the right amount of enquiring about your welfare and conversation to make you feel at home, while also not being intrusive. I enjoyed this fairly new dining experience in Cape town and look forward to going there again.

We went to the Stack for the first time and were really positively surprised. We were at the old Leinster Hall (before it became The Stack) several times and were delighted to see the transformation that had taken place. The decor is unusual yet has style. The staff especially the bar tender and the waiters were outstanding. We had predrinks at the bar. The cocktails are very different and many of them herb infused which was a refreshing experience. The food was very good and not too pretentious. I had the french onion soup for starter, pork belly for mains (outstanding) and and a cheese platter for dessert.
I agree with the previous reviewer that the acoustics of the restaurant is not good. We found it too loud and went after the mains upstairs to have our cheese platter in the lounge which was great. We had to convince the hostess to let us upstairs after dinner but that was quickly sorted out.
Overall a fantastic experience and we will be back!

Dear me, what a pity seeing a review based on sound levels at The Stack.I could list many other Cape Town venues, all mostly good but with impossible consideration for this important factor, which I do respect, and we all find a challenge, but a great deal more prevalent than 'The Stack'. Having known this venue as a private home, as Leinster Hall Restaurant under the competent management of Peter & Gloria Langer (remember 'The Beachcomber' in Camps Bay), as a venue where celebrated chef soon to open a major venue in Johannesburg, the modest but wonderful David Higgs was at one time, and yes as the 'Cape Town Club', I cannot describe how happy we are with the present restaurant, bar and club, superbly executed and managed by hugely talented husband and wife couple, Nigel Pace and Sarah Ord, and their great intuitive team. A centrally situated haven in this city, where sadly egos often outdo care for the paying customer, certainly not the case here.
