During our one week stay in the Mother City, eating diner at the Africa Café was the best choice we made. Obviously the food was very good. But the complete atmosphere makes us remember this evening:
We started with a drink at the bar, because we were early. After being seated we were introduced with the diner (15 dishes from different African countries. Most of the were vegetarian, which fitted us perfect). While food was prepared, a face painter went from table to table and offered face-painting, which most of the guests happily accepted (that included not only children :-).
Later in the evening, there was a short show with music and drums, performed by the staff.
We sat outside in some kind of patio, a lovely evening, where everthing fit together. Considering European prices still cheap entertainment and worth each Rand.

Where do I start? First, you get about 8-10 dishes that come out to your table. You can keep ordering whatever you like, but I could barely finish what they brought out.

Every dish, and I do mean EVERY dish was fantastic. They had a different taste than what I am accustomed to in the US, but they were delicious nonetheless. Then, about 10-12 of the staff went to every room and sang / danced what seemed like a sort of ceremonial dance.

Everybody had a smile on his or her face, the food was outstanding, and go there on an empty stomach because there is plenty of food to be had.

This is an experience I will not soon forget.

This was an absolutely outstanding meal! There were foods from Senegal, South Africa, Congo & others. There was cassava bread, salad, stuffed papaya, spring bok, a broccoli dish, a butternut squash dish, fish, chicken legs, sesame chicken, dessert & more. I'm a bit of a picky eater. I don't like fish, squash, or papaya but I liked everything. After dinner the wait staff sang for us. It was a set menu & there was ample food for all when you ate the serving of each dish. However if you took a bite of several things & only liked 1, you could have as much of that 1 as you wanted. It was a bit pricey (about $30) but you definitely got your money's worth. It opens at 6.

This place was recommended by our hotel and the experience was memorable. Not only do you experience a great variety of African food( far too much to eat), you are also entertained by the customer wait staff, who sing and dance while you eat. The decor in the restaurant was so artistic. There is even a lovely gift shop available for purchase either before or after your dinner. Very lively place; not suitable for quiet, romantic meals.
