Great place with excellent staff. The tapas are very creative. Like truffeled chicken liver paté. Calamari and steak tapas are both just a little bit out of the ordinary, very tasty! Good wine menu with some great wines. Place to go to.

I had marked Chalk and Cork down as a place with good reviews, and its convenience to Woolworths grocery meant we stopped there the first night. We were seated upstairs and enjoyed wine and the aubergine fries and then a pizza. The food was really good, not a lot of fancy ingredients, just tasty. Service was pleasant, there when you needed them but not in the way. Recommended.

Hi There,

Thank you for taking the time to join and post a review. Glad to hear you enjoyed your experience in our cozy upstairs area.

The service team has been working hard lately to increase their service knowledge and strive to exceed their guests expectations, so always wonderful to receive feedback of this nature.

Don't forget that we have a wide variety of tapas available along with the wood fired pizza - definitely not to miss!

Hope to welcome you back soon.

Kind regards,

Rachel West

Background - I was alone and this being the last night in Africa I wanted to eat something else than strange pizza or burgers in oversized new world please-let-me-become-obese-sized portions, yet be able to sit and read my great book (Fred Kumahlo's Bit*#es' Brew if you're wondering...).

Impressions:

Seating - I sat downstairs, by the entrance and found it perfect as I was alone.

Service - really nice and knowledgable service. Busy night, but they were attentative and very friendly without being too nice

Food - I had three tapas/small-to-medium sized plates. The charcuterie plank with good charcuteries and condiments of top quality (two thumbs up for the capers). The beet-root salad was not perfect - I suggest that you add something nutty, nuts or why not Puy lentils. The marinated steak with fries, three letters OMG!!!! The best steak frites I've had since ever... perfect steak, perfect - and really they were - fries. An interesting sauce (red wine sauce with more than a hint of chilli), and cherry tomatoes baked to perfection. For me this is the best plate of food in all its simplicity that I've eaten this year - hands down! It's not elaborate, it's not avant garde, but it's classical mediterrean plates without fuzz.

Not a dessert kind-of-fellow, I treated myself with an extra glass of wine.

Drink - I stuck to a South African Southern Rhône blend which was really good, both with the food and as an ad-hoc dessert.

Hi Bobby,

Firstly we hope you had an enjoyable trip in South Africa and thank you for joining us for your very last evening.

It is great to hear positive feedback on the service staff as there has been quite a few new faces joining with lots of attentive training, so will be sure to pass on the compliments to the team.

Wonderful feedback on our steak special that we have been running - this was something the chef was looking at keeping permanently as we have had a wonderful response on the simple combinations presented - glad you enjoyed it! Your constructive criticism has been passed onto the chef to have a look at regarding the salad and we thank you for this.

Hope to welcome you again in the near future!

Kind regards,

Rachel West

We popped in before movies one night and had a great Banting pizza. Crisp Cali base and yummy topping.
Good wine selection. Staff were lovely. We joked around and had a good time.
Well worth it if you are in the area

Good Day,

Thanks for joining - we are lucky to be near to the amazing and historical Labia Theatre. Our banting pizzas have become increasingly popular offering the super crispy base that one often cannot achieve.

Awesome to hear you had a bit of fun during your quick visit, our team is full of new faces, but each with their own personality that makes the restaurant atmosphere what it is :)

Hope to see you back soon for a pre-movie pizza!

Kind regards,

Rachel West

We stayed at the African Pride 15 on Orange for 3 nights and looked for restaurants within a safe walking distance at night. We discovered the Kloof Street fit that need and found this small restaurant for tapas in that area. A small place, it offers some seating on street level and a small dining room on floor two. We enjoyed the fried eggplant, cheese board and summer pizza - all very reasonably priced. The wait staff was wonderful. Many have come through a charitable training program the restaurant supports. Five rand is added to your bill for support of the charity but you can choose not to be charged if you desire. We didn't want a big dinner and this restaurant was just right with their offerings of small plates.
