My husband and I are in our early 30s and joined Acacia Africa in February in Nairobi for the ‘28 days overland experience’. The correspondence from Acacia in the run up to the trip was great and we had a good idea of what to expect. Our guide met us at the hotel the day before the trip as planned and we had no problems meeting up with the group the next day. Everything about the trip went brilliantly. Our trip went back on itself a fair bit, in order to fit in both the Maasai Mara and Serengeti NPs and to pick up/drop off people doing smaller parts of the big trip in Nairobi – we were in Nairobi three times in our 28 day trip. However, it was worth it as it was good to meet new people – it was just a shame that the Nairobi campsite was our least favourite (although it had the best wifi we found in Africa!) Our guide Maya and driver Masai were incredibly knowledgeable and were both amazing cooks as well, treating our small group to their tasty home cooking. I went overlanding in Africa fully expecting to be on ‘Africa time’ – but we were very rarely delayed and managed to have time to do all of the activities we had picked this trip to do. That said, the traffic in Kampala is the worst I have ever experienced! Our guides stopped along the way to buy local produce from people selling on the road which we fully supported and felt we were properly supporting the local population during the trip. It was a very cost-efficient trip leaving lots of cash over for the activities. My advice to anyone booking is to do as much as you can afford to do! We decided early on what activities we would focus on (nature and landscape and cultural history) and we weren’t short of things to do. There were too many highlights to list – and the guides and drivers were good at providing advice as well. The wildlife encounters on the trip were phenomenal – we spent the whole time thinking we were on a David Attenborough show! This trip truly shows Africa at its very best.
Dear jkerr2uk,
Thank you for writing a heartfelt and in-depth review, we appreciate your kind words! So pleased that you enjoyed your tour and the crew made it memorable. All the best for your future travels,
Kindest Regards, The Acacia Team.
First of all the safari pass is a big rip off! They do not use this money as they say. It is more money for the owners. At the start of the tour we met at the hotel, very nice however the first leg of the trip was with the owners. We were treated like we were uninvited guest. Like they payed for the trip and we were along for free. No we paid Over $6000 us dollars. The owners talked among themselfs for over 4 hours while we tryed to sleep. They even went on the first safari with us and we had no say as to where to go or what to see. The guide smelled like garlic. every day. His dental care was bad and ever time he talked it smelled! They say dinner is included most of the time and they do not give you a drink for dinner. Like milk, water, soda, etc. Yes, alcohol is not included. Of course. Also some places they give you a 1 course dinner! Some 3 course! They do not explain this when we book! All the good reviews, beware! IF you can check the IP# and that is difficult, it is usually from the owners themselves or friends of theirs! We run out of gas one time and lucky we were out of the desert and they were selling gas on the black market just where we run out. Very lucky or we would of missed our Victoria falls tours! They tell you to tip everyone. The owners should do this in advance since they make a huge profit! Do not tip! DO not use this company for your own good.
Hi Uzchuck,
Thank you for posting your review following your recent Acacia tour. We pride ourselves on our customer service and so naturally I am concerned at your comments. We have operated the Southern African Magic tour for over 10 years, and it has become one of our most popular ‘Small Group’ accommodated tours. It operates weekly during the high season (July-Oct) and every two weeks of the year outside that period with a minimum of two clients.
The Safari Pass pays certain on-ground costs of the tour including entry and game drives in game reserves and national parks detailed within the tour dossier and so I am not clear why you think otherwise. Pricing generally is structured this way to give flexibility to clients who wish to split payments and settle the Safari Pass in Africa, and to others who prefer to pre-pay it. In regard to pricing generally we certainly do all we can to keep costs under control in order to offer competitive prices. I know of no other company that offers the same tour itinerary - with same inclusions, accommodations and meals – at a lower price and so believe we are largely successful in that endeavour. As you know we include 12 dinners i.e. every night except one night in Victoria Falls, where there is time and ample choice of restaurants for clients to try local fare; and 13 breakfasts (every day except day 1, when clients will normally have eaten at their hotel before the tour begins). We leave most lunches to clients’ account but do include it on five days of the trip where there is advantage to clients to have a meal arranged. In any event this is per the tour descriptions and dossier.
You mention the ‘owner’ being with you for part of the tour. Actually, it was one of our Operations Managers who was with the group on company business. They were with you for the first 2 days and so there were 4 people plus your driver in the 9-seater vehicle for that time. I understand that they sat in the back row leaving the first and second row of seats available.
You mention your driver smelling of garlic. I am sorry for any offence and have passed a message to him to be more careful in future. You mention the fuel stop on the drive to Victoria Falls. Normally the driver will top up at Hwange (100km before) but I understand fuel wasn’t available there that day. He called ahead to our Victoria Falls office and if he hadn’t been able to source it elsewhere a stand-by vehicle was ready to bring fuel if needed.
In regard to tipping, this is a custom in Africa where local suppliers are accustomed to receiving a small tip if they have provided a good service. It is not mandatory and always a matter for clients, however. The same custom exists elsewhere in the world.
Finally, you say that favourable reviews are done by the owner or friends? No, they are not and frankly it is a ridiculous assertion. We have operated in Africa for 25 years and carried many thousands of clients in that time, earning a reputation as a specialist and established African tour operator. We welcome customer feedback. I am pleased to say it is usually very positive but where it is not, we read carefully what is said, speak to the staff members, tour guides or suppliers concerned and investigate what caused any dissatisfaction and do whatever necessary to put things right.
Kind regards,
The Acacia Team
We loved having the opportunity of interacting from people from all over the world. Animals and multicultural experience was amazing. One of the best trips I've had hands down!
I booked a 3 week tour with Acacia Africa from Kruger to Cape Town & loved every minute! The guides are passionate, fun, and full of information. The campsites are all diverse and great places to stay. The food surpassed my expectations and the activities (both included and optional extras) are fantastic! I will definitely book again!
Dear tanyaghandour, THANK YOU for your incredible review. We are thrilled to hear you had a magical experience on tour :) and look forward to seeing you again soon!

This is the only way to properly travel in Africa! The guides have done the routes so many times that they have so much local knowledge you can interact with. Hats off to our driver Sam who drove us the whole way with some very long stints!
My 41 day tour was fabulous and I wish I could have stayed for longer!
