Oak Lodge
Reviewed 28 May 2013

the oak lodge used to be very popular and occupied hostel until few years ago, when managment changed and it became dormitory only hostel. the new manager, an aggresive old lady from england , made every possible mistake and hence the place is usually empty and depressing. she changed all the african decoraions to ads of beers and alcohol companies, and hanged signs saying : "you will be deported immidiately if you bring in any beverage from the outside". the immidiate result is that the bar is allways empty, cause no guest want to feel as if he is there only to purchase beers. another mistake was to choose african refugees / poor immigrants as the receptionists ( cause she could pay them less, or pay with accomodation). the result is wierd and dangerous attitudes, like the one receptionists who tells the guests that the big sofa in front of the t.v. is "her sofa", or the other one who likes to talk about jesus and shout at people - or at least at me - YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE IN JESUS !!

Room Tip: take shower only on the second floor - the ground floor showers are unisex and doorless...??

My partner and I stayed in a small flat, seperate from the hostel. It had a fantastic view of Table Mountain. It was a great little place and we had everything we could want. We shared a bathroom with anther couple n the flat next door but never had any problems.
The staff are incredibly friendly and in the evening we were given a few free shots at the bar as the barman was surprised there were still some drinks we had not tried!
We were within walking distance of the Gardens Shopping Centre. There was also a 4-day festival in Long Street going on while we were there so we enjoyed that for a few nights. Again it was within walking distance of the accomodation, there were singers, fashion shows, fire eaters etc.
You can book some great day trips from the reception and we chose to go on a Cape Peninsula Tour which was fab. We went to Houts Bay, Simons Town and Boulders Beach (saw all the African Penguins on the beach). We drove up to Cape Point and then rode Mountain Bikes through the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve to Bordjlesrif for lunch. We then had a hiketo the Cape of Good Hope. It was stunning scenery.
