Its best to travel here with a guide to understand that this place represents a little more than just colorful homes. These colorful houses belong to erstwhile slaves (during the apartheid era). A bit of history, nice photo-op and a great view from the drive up to last homes on the stretch.

I did this tour with Manny from the hop on hop off bus company. he was a fantastic guide. the area would be a shame to do without a guide because there are so many interesting details to hear about. the brightly coloured houses are so photogenic and the people who live here interesting. a must see in cape town

A lot of history of slavery in Capetown with the Portuguese and Dutch empire in the east like Malaysia in the 15th century.. Colourful houses of previous slaves' owners and a little restaurant called Bismillah serves beef bobotie and mainly Indian cuisine. Worth a visit!

We went on our own to visit Bo-kaap. The colorful homes reminded me of parts of the Caribbean. We did visit the museum to learn more. We should have booked a walking guide who perhaps could have shown us more. On your own it is underwhelming.

Clearly the previous reviewers who state the Bo-kaap is merely a photo opportunity should have been escorted by our guide, Manny. He was the 'freeby' walking tour escort around the Bo-kaap and part of the Hop-on Hop-off bus deal. We visited mosques, Malay restaurants, the lady in the purple house who gives cookery demonstrations, the spice shops, the free samples, the wonderful wall paintings and murals and all the nooks and crannies not mentioned in the travel books. He was entertaining, informative and obviously well respected judging by the response he got when greeting the locals. He showed us far more than we would have seen guided from a travel book.
