If you are going to do one thing in Cape Town, this is it. While you can hike up to Table Mountain for free, if you have a limited visit and are not inclined for a long uphill hike, then take this cable car to the top of the mountain for an interesting landscape and simply breathtaking view of Cape Town and the peninsula. Our hotel recommended that we purchase the tickets online via our credit card so that we would not need to wait in line at the bottom of the cable car. We did that, but when we arrived late in the afternoon mid-week, there was little line. I am sure that it gets super busy on weekends and in the morning. We needed to wait about 10 minutes for the elevator that took us up to the next level and entrance to the car. The car rotates so that everyone gets to see the great views. Stand next to the window if you can, and don't worry if you are facing back when you load, you will eventually see the view. The landscape on the top is very interesting, and there are a number of self-guided walk of varying length that you can take. Hopefully you will see the Rock Hylexes (also called Dassies) that are small furry creatures that are most closely related to the elephant (go figure). The mountain is frequently carpeted in clouds, so grab any chance when the weather is nice.
