Southern Sun The Cullinan
Ranked #34 of 113 Hotels in Cape Town Central
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 24 December 2016 via mobile

Having stayed at the Cullinan Hotel previously about 8 years ago, i decided to book a 3-night stay at the hotel again for my family vacation. Cape Town has become such a popular tourist destination these days, and there are a large variety of hotels in the city now. The Cullinan is in an excellent location, directly opposite the Westin Hotel and Cape Town convention centre. The hotel is also flanked by the Southern Sun Waterfront hotel, which belongs to the same hotel group, Tsogo Sun.

I managed to get an excellent rate online, and one thing i must commend Tsogo Sun on is that they allow you to book for 2 Adults and 2 Kids on their website, unlike most other hotels in the world which will tell you there are no rooms available if you indicate you are traveling with 2 kids. This immediately tells you that the Cullinan is a family-friendly hotel.

The room allocated to me had 2 double beds and had ample space for 2 adults and 2 kids sharing. The bathroom is quite small however it had a bath tub, shower and all the other amenities that are required. The hotel parking must be one of the most convenient in Cape Town, as you can bypass the foyer from the parking lot and go straight to your room by taking the lift.

The breakfast spread was decent enough for the rate that was charged, and all the standard breakfast fare was catered for.
If you are looking for over the top luxury and seclusion, the Cullinan is probably not for you. However, if you are looking for a value for money, family-friendly and unpretentious base for your Cape Town vacation in an excellent location, you will not go wrong by booking at The Cullinan.

We have just stayed there for two nights. It's was just perfect. It's our second time at the hotel and it felt good to be back. We were offered to pay a bit more but for a suite. Best money we spent.
It's has serous luxury feel to the room and we could not ask for more. Only thing now is that the suite is all we would like now.
The breakfast is wonderful, pity the sausages were not beef as well so I could not eat it. But there is plenty to eat so I was not hungry just greedy.
The Kids Club is a great way of getting some r&r from the younger people.
The beds are luxury, beautiful curtains and a lovely bottle of wine to welcome us.
Will we stay here again, of course we back in May.

Room Tip: Book a suite

This hotel may be great for people attending conferences but not for new visitors as we were. We found the rooms and the ensuite very cramped and the small windows gave a cell-like feeling despite having a view over the harbour. We also felt the hotel was very isolated and although there was an hourly shuttle bus to the waterfront it only took 13 people which I gather was sometimes an issue. The hotel was on the Hop On Hop Off bus route but that does have its limitations and not everyone wants to be at the mercy of taxi drivers as an alternative. The swimming pool though attractive and well maintained was difficult to get in and out off as there were no rails to help access. The range of food offered at breakfast was good though the egg station was sometimes chaotic. They often ran out of waffles and surely a hotel of this caliber could serve genuine maple syrup instead of maple flavoured syrup! Room service was very good and prompt thanks to Margaret and Alvida saving us the effort of dealing with the restaurant scene! The wifi on my iPad was difficult to access and I needed frequent help though my partner had no problem with a laptop. This bring me to the big plus of the hotel which was the saving grace....the superb staff who were friendly, efficient and always ready to help. Despite them I would not recommend this hotel because of its location and the noise and disruption of people attending conferences.

We loved our stay at the Cullinan hotel. It surpassed all our expectations and we were amazed at the high level of service and friendly staff. As someone joked it was five star service at a four star hotel. The standard of the hotel really is more akin to five stars. The hotel itself is luxurious and the rooms well equipped. The staff go out of their way to make your stay that much more comfortable and our little son made friends with everyone who worked there. We definitely can't wait to come back on our next holiday there.

I've been staying at the Cullinan for around eight years. The hotel has a number of positives - it is very well located for the conference centre nearby, the short trip to the V&A Waterfront or a 10 minute walk up to the start of Long Street. The ground floor bar is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast facilities are superb - a huge choice of options.

The more average aspects include that the rooms, although sizeable, are a little tired (particularly the bathrooms) and lack some amenities. The gym is also relatively small. A couple of lifts serve quite large floors which means a bit of a wait some mornings.
