Hotel Commodore - value for money

Review of The Commodore
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 03 May 2024
Golf trip in 8-person group; spent 7 nights.

Comfortable rooms; clean though slightly dated. Amazing views if you get lucky with the room. Very helpful staff and concierge service.

Breakfast is functional & adequate without being over the top; food quality was good throughout. The bar is just past the lobby and well stocked; popular with hotel guests in the evenings.

The hotel is located 2 mins from the V&A mall - unlimited pubs and restaurants. Well connected to all points in Cape Town. The location is safe and presents no issues per se.

Overall good value to for money if you are not looking for 5* luxury

The Commodore Hotel is one of the secret gems of the V&A Waterfront Hotel Gallery. I used it for the past 15 years and it's always a hearty pleasure to meet the staff and enjoy the overall hospitality of the hotel. If you are looking for clean and up to date accommodation, great food and very friendly staff, the Commodore is the right place for you. At a very reasonable price.

We asked for an Uber at the reception and theydid it for us.
We asked for the price and we were told 220 zar for the round trip to a restaurant very close to the hotel.
A car came to pick us but we realized later in the evening that it was not a Uber but a car rental connnected with the hotel.
When we were ready to go back from the restaurant to the hotel we called the car but we had to wait half an hour without any explication.
In lack of an answer we called Uber who gave us a quotation of 50 zar (one way) Because our original car phoned us announcing his arrival we cancelled Uber.
Finally back to the hotel he pretended from us another 220 zar.
Totally 440 zar versus the 100 zar that we would have paid with Uber.
Clearly a very bad and not fair deal and a strong unpleasant discussion with the hotel

We stayed in this hotel for five days with my family and it was my son‘s birthday. The hotel is located near the waterfront center which is a great location. The hotel looks a little old however, it is very well kept and maintained so everything is perfect even better is the, the team and the service. The team especially Gadija at he guest relations was superb. We came without any plans, but she took very good care of us and we had a wonderful five days in Cape Town and she did a surprise for my son. Thank you very much for everything.

We stayed here for 3 nights in mid January , easy check in , pleasant staff, lovely views over table top mountain, great breakfast. Close to V @A waterfront which was ideal. Friendly guys at the door to greet you and help you if you need anything.

One of the best parts about this hotel is its super convenient location to the Waterfront. Just a few minutes walk and you're there! I walked back several times late in the evening and never felt uncomfortable or unsafe. The room was clean and well maintained, but had a very strange layout when it came to light switches and outlets. The only place I could find to charge my devices was a single accessible outlet all the way across the room on the far side of the desk. Thankfully it was just me and I could rotate through my electronics, but if you had more than one or two things to charge it might be a challenge! Excellent breakfast buffet. Hotel has a generator that kicks in during load shedding (which they post a schedule of in the lobby). The shortbread cookies with the tea/coffee in the room was a nice touch.
