A week of business and some pleasure..the latter much thanks to the hotel and its staff.
Great location, clean, fantastic service, super nice and helpful staff, wonderful food and, well, just really good vibes. Not super modern, but that didn't really matter..

This is another review on our African Odyssey which was spread over three weeks covering South Africa and Zimbabwe, then ending in Tanzania. Our trip was planned and put together by Lion Travel in Canada who did an awesome job making this possible. We dealt with Mary Ellen Chown at Lion Travel who I would highly recommend if anyone is looking for the complete African experience.

This review deals with the Cape Town portion of our trip.

After leaving leaving Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe we flew to Cape Town via Johannesburg . We were met at the airport and taken to the Commodore Hotel, this hotel is in a fantastic location within walking distance of the famous Victoria and Albert waterfront.
Our room was really nice and the staff on the whole were very friendly, but the reason for only awarding three stars instead of four was that we had an housekeeping problem that wasn't resolved until the last night we before we left. What made this particularly irritating was that after complaining to the Guest service manager and then providing him with a detailed letter explaining the issue, no follow up occurred to make sure our issue had been taken care of, and as of today that letter we wrote has never been responded too, very disappointing because this hotel is perfectly situated for seeing Cape Town :(

As for the rest of our Cape Town visit we had a tour planned by Lion Travel to visit the Cape Peninsula along with a stop at Cape Point where the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Oceans collide, amazing beauty and well worth the visit. We also visited Seal Island at Hout Bay and stopped at the penguin colony at Boulders beach followed by lunch.

Later during the day we had a wine tasting at Groot Constania winery which was awesome.
Other highlights of our four nights included the cable car ride to the top of Table Top mountain and the views from the top are simply breathtaking. Get there early and get your tickets in advance, we got a taxi there and back and it was very quick and reasonably priced. One other neat thing was that as you ascend to the top the cable car continues to rotate 360 degrees giving everyone the chance to take some amazing photo's, this also applies as you descend.

Probably the most emotional excursion we took was the visit to Robben Island where Nelson Madela spent much of his lifetime as a polictical prisoner, we were guided around by an ex-political prisoner who spent 7 years on Robben Island after being sentenced to 20 years, hearing him tell his story was remarkable and emotional. Just really moved by everything we saw and heard that day. One tip again get your ferry tickets in advance and be at the pier minimum of 30 minutes before the ferry leaves, you can walk from the Commodore hotel to the pier where the ferry leaves.
The trip across to Robben Island provides you with an amazing view of Cape Town and the Table Top mountain as its backdrop.

Final word on Cape Town, it is one of the most beautiful cities we have ever been too, and extremely safe and the people are very friendly, the icing on the cake was that the US$ goes far against the South African Rand making it a very cheap and inexpensive country to visit :)

Off season so price was good for high quality. Nice room, friendly staff, and great breakfast. The only not so great aspect was that the tub was old and worn. Everything else was fine. Good location near VA Waterfront. Would book again.

They had on-sight staff that helped us plan a few activities and make reservations, staff called cabs promptly when needed, good European-style breakfast included, and clean rooms. Rooms were more American-style than most European places I've traveled--very clean, well-appointed, spacious, comfortable bedding, great shower, robes provided, hair dryer provided. 5 minute walk to Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and 10-15 minute cab ride to downtown that cost about $5 one-way.
