Reviewed 11 January 2016

I have just arrived back from Cape Town and the Commodore hotel is a great base for staying near the waterfront. Just walking distance from the shops and bars.
The hotel is slightly dated but functional and well run. The food was very good we ate there on three occasions, the seafood platter is excellent. The Portswood hotel next door is also good it has a Malay theme and the fish curry is spot on.
The staff at the Commodore are very good and friendly especially the girls at the bar area. The pool is small and I would guess if the hotel full it would be a scramble for beds. The Gym is good too.
There is a spa for treatments but neither me or my wife used it but it looked fine.
The exchange rate is superb at the moment so everything is ridiculously cheap. We had no problem with taxis and booking trips the staff are very knowledgeable and will book anything for you. The winery trip is a must we went to Stellenbosch for a half day booked directly with the hotel also cape point with a private guide again through the hotel both very good.
I would not hesitate to go back and probably will.

Room Tip: The higher rooms have the views either table Mountain or the waterfront.

Starting on the positive side--which is always more pleasant to write about--this hotel has some wonderful wait staff in the restaurant, a generous breakfast buffet, and a great location. The gym is well equipped and the pool is nice.

But on the negative side, our rooms where small and the a/c systems noisy and difficult to calibrate for a pleasant temperature. An unnecessary controversy with the reception also pulled down our impression.I doubt that all the details are of public interest, but the point is that we could have arrived at the satisfactory outcome much quicker if a more reasonable attitude had been applied from the start. The same adjustment to the number in our party was done in all the other hotels in South Africa without any difficulty, but required quite some negotiation and involvement of the booking agency here.

We recently stayed at the commodore to watch the cricket at Newlands. Not only is the hotel perfectly situated for the v and a but is also only 10 to 15 minutes away from numerous hot spots in Cape Town. Our room was well decorated immaculately clean really comfortable bed with superior bed linen. Serviced and replenished everyday with efficiency and discretion. The staff were brilliant. From arriving and being greeted by the door staff the guest relations travel desk. Bar staff waiting staff and house keeping. The food was lovely too. Nothing was too much trouble the Commodore isn't starchy and pretentious it's friendly welcoming and homely! Would return without hesitation!

Me and my partner stayed from the 28 December to the 1January 2016 at this hotel. From our arrival from another hotel we had problems. We arrived about 11H00 to check in. We where told our room is still not ready. I then ask the reception what time it might be ready could not get a proper answer out of staff. But was told " o very soon" they put on a priority on our room. After about 11:45 i ask again the reception when the room will be ready the same answer was give to me soon. Which i was a bit annoyed which i request to speak to the manager. Which i was glad to say i was told in the next 15 minutes. That never materialized which by then me and my partner gave up and went for a walk in the waterfront. We came after 2hoo the room was finally sorted out. !!!

The second issue which i was not happy about as Cape Town was going through a heat wave that time there was no place in the foyer or even in the dining room when we had breakfast a cool space to enjoy was so hot and uncomfortable. The only place where you could escape the heat was in your hote lroom. This is the first hotel which i have visit where the dining room is so hot not even cool to relax and have relaxing breakfast, fair enough it was hot but i been in hotels where there was cool spaces such as the foyer or the lounge or even the dining room that was comfortable in the heat of the day This was a totally a turn off for me. i stayed in hot countries before where at least this spaces where cool. Okay i do understand there was a space outside by the pool for people who want to sit outside but all off us dont enjoy that heat so early in the morning maybe the doors which lead to the swimming pool could have been closed up or something could have been done.

Third issue I was not happy about we hired a car and use the parking service at the hotel , there was only one person who can take car or rather you wait a long time for service here at the concierge . i am not complaining about the person helping out just not enough staff to assist the customers. Specially for this time of year when the hotels are busy.

Fourthly i was not impressed with very blaze attitude or rather the lac luster of the reception staff who was not really interested to assist or did not really care about there customers. or are ill informed if a question gets ask for example about when could a room be ready dont say o soon that for me is not a answer. Guys this area needs more serious a jack up and also the concierge area more staff needed here to assist the customers.

For me the only benefit of this hotel it was right in the waterfront close to shops walking distance and was very good for fireworks on New Year thats it.

But was extremely disappointment will not stay here again.

Room Tip: Only thing i can say pay more if you want good view such example Table Mountain

We stayed in this maritime themed hotel during December 2015. The property is situated in close proximity to the V and A Waterfront. The rooms are comfortable whilst the the food on offer in the dining room is superb. All staff members go out of their way to assist wherever they can. The only gripe that we had was that they only usually serviced our rooms in the late afternoon but other than that this is a hotel that I would highly recommend.
