Clean. Good service. Friendly Staff. Best part is the location. Centrally located between the University of Cape Town Business School and the Waterfront. Easy walking distance to shops, restaurants, & attractions.

On arrival our booked double room turned out to be a twin. At reception they tried to say that booking through some other agent meant that they could not guarantee you would get the room you booked. Eventually they did adapt the room to a double, why couldn't this have been done without argument? Having visited here a few years ago and been very pleased we were disappointed with the attitude of the staff. Breakfast was very poor, everything over cooked. Not up to expectations at all. We will not be staying there again.

The staff throughout the hotel were good, did they jobs right, but didn't really show an interest in going the extra mile for the guest, who knows if they acted this was to us though since we were a group of 30 college students. The rooms were nice, but the location was definitely the best part of this hotel. Right in the waterfront, so convenient!

Portswood Hotel in Cape Town, 22nd – 25th may 2015

I am a travel agent who creates and escorts groups to Africa

I originally wanted to book the Commodore Hotel, which is a sister property and right next door to the Portswood, though was told that the Portswood is much better and is probably the best hotel in Cape Town. My experience there was of a property that doesn’t care and isn’t interested in client satisfaction.

On arrival we were shown to room 103 on the ground floor wedged between the public toilets and a managers office. We pulled up the blind to see our view we found that we looked straight onto the breakfast venue and people having breakfast could see straight into the room. Meanwhile the rest of my group were placed on the third floor, in fact one of them had a suite.

The front desk seemed surprised when we asked to be moved and repeated attempts to speak to a manager were turned aside with lame excuses. We were finally moved to another room, after much huffing and puffing from the staff on reception.

Now to the rooms, very ordinary to say the least. The bathroom had a shower over the bath, which in itself isn’t unusual, what was unusual was the height of the bath. I am 6 foot tall and I struggled to step out of the bath/shower safely, I would hate to see someone elderly try to do it.

The Concierge didn’t know the meaning of the word and his only response to a request was “go ask reception”. When I finally got to see a manager, Lisa, on the last morning of our stay she explained to me that the Concierge is really just the name for a Porter/Bellhop in South Africa. She also listened to my feedback and concerns and then basically dismissed them as that wasn’t how her staff performed their duties. She seemed surprised that we didn’t like room 103 as this was one of the hotels “show rooms” and also seemed very glad to get rid of another dissatisfied guest.

Would I stay here again, definitely not? Would I put clients here again, definitely not?

Room Tip: Book into the Commodore Hotel next door

Dear Guest,

It is with great regret that we read of the terrible experience you had during your most recent stay with us at the PortsWood Hotel. I assure you that we are proud of the service we deliver to all our guests and what you experienced is certainly not our usual standard and also not in line with the service culture and reputation we work so hard to maintain.

We have dealt with the matters reported by you and most importantly, provided the necessary training to the team members you mentioned in your comments. Although the service you experienced is not acceptable in any way, I also want to assure you that the intentions were always good.

We would like to make good for what has gone wrong here and we urge you to please make contact with Management, as your details on Tripadvisor is very limited and I would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss this with you.

I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully resolving this matter in a way that is acceptable to you.

Yours Sincerely,

Japie van der Merwe
Deputy General Manager

I stayed at the Portswood hotel for the first time during a recent business trip. I found the hotel to be quaint and newly renovated. The rooms have been redone and are comfortable. Staff are well trained and hospitable. Being in walking distance to the waterfront is a plus! There is no gym but you may use the facilities at their sister hotel, the Commodore, which is next door.

Room Tip: be sure to ask for the quieter rooms
