Arriving in Cape Town on a cold Friday evening, the last thing you'd want to do is to be held up by hotel checking-in procedures and I was once again impressed by Protea hotel, so efficient and zero hassles! I was also very happy with the tidiness of the entire hotel plus the fact that its location is super convenient made my visit much better.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights and enjoyed it. The location is superb, the rooms were clean and the staff were friendly. We did not make use of the restaurant.

If your room is in the "cell block" portion, it does seem very much like you are walking through an institution because that part of its heritage will always be there. When combined with the fact that the building is co-located with a business school, it comes across as very strange indeed. That said if you overlook the weirdness factor, the rooms are very nice and perfectly adequate for the purpose. The Breakwater Lodge was good value overall.

4 nights here in the month of June. Very clean rooms with Tea and Coffee facilities. Good Spa treatment. Huge Breakfast selection. Switch off the powerful Air Con on a night to avoid a runny nose in the morning. Less than a 5 minute walk to the V&A waterfront. Very safe location.

Great location! It's right on the Waterfront and within walking distance to all the attractions in the area including the hop on hop off bus. The hotel staff was amazing and very helpful. The rooms are nicely furnished and suited our purpose (5 adults in 2 rooms). My only complaint is that the doors to the bathrooms are frosted glass and partially see-through. In a room with 3 adults of opposite sex it was a little awkward. Tip: Protea is now a part of Marriott. Make sure to get your points! Also, check the hotel's website before booking through hotel booking sites. We got an amazing deal on the hotel's website that was not on any of the booking sites.

We stayed here for 4 nights as part of a secret escapes South Africa trip. The hotel is an old prison and that in itself creates an atmosphere of times gone by in the ever developing city of Cape town. Our room was a standard room and although small perfectly adequate for a short stay. The bathroom had a large shower but no bath not a problem for us. The bed was a small double if you like space book a twin. We stayed on a B&B basis and the breakfast was very good, lots of choice both hot and cold. Due to inclement weather we did eat one evening in the restaurant and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. Staff were professional and helpful. This hotel is good for anyone on a budget and whilst it might not be my hotel of choice in Cape town it is certainly value for money. Could not connect to wi-fi 24hrs free but time expired before we had chance to use it. Bar is part of the restaurant, never managed to find the lounge.

Room Tip: Upgrade to superior or opt for a twin for more space
