We absolutely love the Mt. Nelson. While some rooms are absolutely created better than others, most rooms are indulgent, with fantastic beds and so many good views. Yes, it's the grand dame of hotels in Capetown, and if you like that kind of hotel you'll appreciate the Mt. Nelson, from it's daily high teas to it's wonderful buffet breakfast (and lunch buffet). I brought a group of fifteen people---and in the midst of our trip we had to move out for three days due to a miners convention filling the hotel---and I can't describe how happy EVERYONE was to return to the Mt. Nelson. And on a nice summer evening it's great sitting on the back patio off the main lobby having drinks, or dinner. The spa is wonderful too, and we treated our clients to massages---which were much appreciated and raved about. Loved the pool too, which you overlook from the breakfast and lunch restaurant. And the beds---fantastic. If you don't sleep well----well---it's your fault---not the beds. Returning to the Mt. Nelson after a day out and about in Capetown is simply a delightful indulgence, and is sure to bring a smile to most people.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view...and a big one at that!

We are so pleased that you noticed our beds which have been custom made for our hotel - we do agree that you would be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable mattress. We are delighted that you loved your rooms, the spa, drinks and dinner outdoors on the expansive terrace overlooking the gardens as well as the swimming pool.

This was a nostalgic visit for drinks. I first stayed at the Mount Nelson in 1970 and although it has been through many changes of ownership, it has always kept the high standards of a luxury hotel. My disappointment was the Lord Nelson bar which now okks like a glorified junk room for the storage of chairs. This bar was the hub of the hotel and should have been classified as a National Monument ???? The lounges are still superb.. My granddaughter had a Miss Nellie cocktail which she said was excellent..

Room Tip: In the old part of the hotel

Thank you for your review of your nostalgic visit. The cosy Lord Nelson room hosts many intimate events and dinners so it is still being put to good use and enjoyed by many.

My brother recently got married at the Mount Nelson so I decided to stay at the hotel, with my two young boys, to make arrangements easier for the nuptial celebration.

I was blown away with the levels of service and how the hotel could not do enough to make our stay comfortable in every way. From the onset of my reservation enquiry to the checkout, the hotel was wonderful in every way.

I stayed on the top floor of the main hotel with two interleading rooms as a family suite setup with my two young sons and our nanny as I was working at the same time. The hotel set up my boys' room with penguins on their pillows, colouring-in books and crayons upon arrival and could not stop helping me with them throughout our stay.

The food was fabulous, the service sublime, the pool amazing and the tennis courts a total treat to while away an afternoon with my two terrors, smashing balls under the shadow of table mountain.

You have to do the high-tea while you are there! Simply fabulous and redolent of days of gracious elegance. Can't wait to return.

We have stayed in other Belmond properties, and many 5 star hotels and feel very much that this hotel is resting on its laurels. When we arrived there was some confusion with our booking, The receptionist made a great deal of the fact that we had been upgraded but showed us to a room far smaller than the description of the room which we had booked provided on the booking web site. The room was set up with a third bed in it. The hotel resolved the matter and we were provided with a much better room, but it wasn't a good start. We made clear immediately on arrival that we wanted to have high tea, but because reception wanted to give us a guided tour of the hotel and our room, by the time we eventually got to the terrace for tea, the waiter said they were about to stop serving and there was not enough time for us to enjoy the experience. We had been kept waiting about 20 mins for a table not counting the time for the guided tour. One waiter pointed to a table which he said he would set up for us and then promptly sat another couple down at that table while we continued to wait.
Tea whilst plentiful was fairly inferior.
The planet restaurant lacked atmosphere and was decorated in a somewhat gaudy, inelegant theme and gave us one of the worst meals we had in the Cape province. Much is made of the bar and cocktails, but there is no entertainment after about 7.00pm on a weekday. The Bar is empty and nothing is happening. The place is "dead" in the evenings. You have to share the swimming pool with the local ducks. We didn't get a turn down service on one night Breakfast was fairly ordinary and nothing special, service was slow. Our stay at the Mount Nelson was 4 times more expensive than some of the other five star properties we stayed in during the holiday and offered us the least value for money and at no stage were we made to feel welcome or special- quite the contrary.

Thank you for writing this review and sharing your concerns about your stay with us. Please would you accept our apologies for the miscommunication in the booking arrangement - we are pleased that we were eventually able to find a lovely room for you. We are very sorry that you missed the Afternoon Tea service due to the guided tour of the hotel and do hope that you had another opportunity to experience it.
Our Food and Beverage Manager is aware of your review and is considering implementing some changes to further enhance our offering. Currently, our resident pianist Henry Dike is playing the piano in the lounge adjacent to Planet Bar until 8pm every evening however we will be exploring other entertainment options in the near future. We do hope that should you decide to return to our hotel, you will enjoy a far better experience with us.

Old world style I have been going back for years and years now!

Not everything is perfect but what is makes up for what isn't I could not think of any hotel in Cape Town that I would rather stay in or on balance comes even close to the friendliest staff attentive and kind service on most occasions though breakfast can sometimes especially at the weekends be a bit tiresome to find someone to help serve one.

It is not perfect but any faults are completely overtaken with the great pleasure of being at one of the great locations in the entire world during the European winter.

Can't wait for my next visit!!!
