The once 'famous' and trendy and beautiful "Waterkant" area of the Mother City has sung her swan song. This iconic restaurant that many loved and trusted has turned to a real 'walk on the wild side'! After dodging the foreign car guards en-route to here, offering to sell you any drug that you have have and haven't heard of, you amble into this dark and dingy place. Cafe Manhattan once was a refuge for the rainbow community, a trusted and delicious food paradise. Today it is a sleazy burger-joint where waiting to get served takes almost as long as it does to be presented with the wrong order. The food is edible, but the establishment has long lost it's will to be exceptional. It is now (and I use the term in some effort to still offer some sort of credibility) mediocre.
Our food was served by a waiter who was more interested in looking at his phone. The doors were open on a chilly autumn evening and our table had to be be begged by our party to be wiped clean.
The food was NOT great.
Whatever is happening to the liberal and wonderful village and the 'scene' in Cape Town, has happened here to this restaurant. It's really sad and possibly the end of an era of 'freedom'. The days of the fabulous pastas, the 'World Cup' designer burgers, those magnificent desserts are over. Let the fat lady sing: "Those were the days..." If you want to relive them, go to Bangkok or Sydney...
