If you're visiting Cape Town or a local like me, you simply must try paragliding. Cape Town Tandem Paragliding comes highly recommended. The guys are playful and the "vibe" really nice.

I flew with Kay Dura (the Turkish instructor) and I personally recommend him. With more than 20 years experience, he's got a gift to find those thermal updrafts. We we're airborne for 20-25 minutes.

I will definitely do this again - and I will insist on Kay.

It was our first Tandem Paragliding experience and it was fabulous! The flight was only short (approx.10min) because the wind generally isn't good enough for long flights from Signal Hill but we were informed about this before we flew. And for a first paraglide that wasn't an issue to any of us. The team is very experienced, so all you have to do is enjoy! It's also worth getting the photos and video - they are brilliant quality.

We tried to paraglide with them three times, but weren't lucky with the weather-two times was too windy and third no wind at all. If you want to stay in the air longer(30-45), then, believe me, Cape Town is not the right place. It's extremely touristic and overcrowded. And you can see, standing on the Signal hill parking that instructors rush down. They don't stay in the air longer that 10 min, but to tell the truth, many of the tourists don't mind. For them it's already an extremal experience.
And I am very grateful that guys were honest with us and told us that we should expect not more than 10 min. Then we counted the duration of the flights of others on that days and came to conclusion, that it's simply not our place. They can tell you, that wind doesn't matter, that they use only thermals, but ideal weather condition for paragliding is nice stready breeze (no gusts) of about 5 -10mph and sunny weather.
When the sun warms the ground, it will warm some features more than others (such as rock-faces or large buildings), and these set off thermals which rise through the air. Sometimes these may be a simple rising column of air; more often, they are blown sideways in the wind, and will break off from the source, with a new thermal forming later. Once a pilot finds a thermal, he or she begins to fly in a circle, trying to center the circle on the strongest part of the thermal (the "core"), where the air is rising the fastest. After finding a thermal, paraglider flights can last many hours and cover many hundreds of kilometres, though flights of 1–2 hours and covering some tens of kilometres are more the norm.
What the solution?
If you plan to travel along the Garden Root, then the ideal place for paragliding is Wilderness and Dolphin Point. They have several companies, which offer such services and guys there really enjoy their every flight and try to stay longer in the air.

We booked this activity online. It was quite well handled from the Tandem Paragliding Team, then at the same day, we got a confirmation mail with the important information. Although we arrived late on the Signal Hill due to communication problems, the team has welcomed us friendly and took time for us. The flight was amazing. You had a great view over Cape Town. We really felt save and enjoyed every minute in the air, as the team understood their work really good and were eager to provide us an unforgettable experience. We also purchased the pictures and videos which are on great Quality and worth to buy. A big compliment and thanks to the Tandem Paragliding team, we will definitely do this activity again and recommend it to everyone.
