“Typical african cuisine”
Reviewed 11 April 2017

If you want to taste real African cuisine, you are right at Mama Africa. Nice staff and really good food. Taste the crocodile spit with a tasty peanut dip.

“Turning into a 'bucket list' item....which is unfortunate.”
Reviewed 11 April 2017

Firstly, if there was a 3.5 star rating - I'd give it. If only for the springbok steak.
The reason this place loses out is that it has become a little to much like a safari version of McDonalds.
Location is great, the occasional live band helps the atmosphere, although nobody really seems to be paying attention. And if you want to be treated to novelty meats, then the menu promises much. But the 'go to' dish, the Mama Africa's Wild Game Mixed grill (a) has no price next to it on the menu and (b) turns up as single skewers, some solo pieces with a single baked potato.
The Warthog is dry (but that's pork for you), the Ostrich seemed slightly overdone and crocodile continues to taste like chicken!
The Thelma Mountain Red (mixed grape) went well with the meats. You do need something a little robust to deal with the food and add flavour.
The service was fine, not knockout. But mainly it was the atmosphere that was a let down. You wanted to be be somewhere a little 'edgy' not next to a table with 3 kids under 6 messing around!
This is one of the more expensive places you will eat in Cape Town. I would suggest that you consider other reviews of other places for similar fare.

We made a reservation 3 months in advance because it's always full.
When we arrived we sat in a corner, far away from the bar and band. We only way to see the band was via a black and white LCD screen. There's also something wrong with the acoustics, I could hardly understand my partner who was just 50 cm in front of me.
The food was ok but expensive for what you get. On the bill was an extra amount for the band and you are expected to pay 10-15% extra as a tip. When you are with more than 5, they charge 10% without asking!
The band played ok but the sound was very bad. I think people rate this restaurant high because everyone gives the restaurant high ratings.
Far overpriced, look for another place nearby.

“Good local food ”
Reviewed 7 April 2017 via mobile

We were trying to find somewhere for lunch that would serve traditional local food and this was exactly what we wanted - the bobotie was fantastic, and the mixed game kebab perfect for sampling a few different meats, the Springbok in particular was as good as any fillet steak. Definitely aimed at (and priced for) tourists but still worth a visit!

“Tourist trap”
Reviewed 5 April 2017 via mobile

This restaurant is awfully gimmicky and doesn't really portray the African vibe. The food is less than average, the service is poor. We felt like it was a real shame that we wasted a meal on our short trip in this average restaurant in a city with such an amazing restaurant scene. Honestly - give it a miss, this is not real Cape Town and not real Africa.
