I usually hate boutique hotels because they are often all about appearance rather than comfort but I loved this one, not so much because of the funky decor and the rooftop trailer park (though those are great) but because of the welcoming atmosphere that meets you as you enter and the friendly staff who are so helpful, friendly and professional. We stayed several days and every staff member with whom I had any contact gave me the impression that they love working in this hotel. Happy staff with a positive can-do attitude like the crew of The Grand Daddy ensure a well-run hotel, which in turn ensures extremely happy customers. During our stay we met lots of other customers on the rooftop bar and everyone I spoke to loved it. The restaurant is terrific too, with a wide selection of imaginative dishes and very fairly-priced. If I ever win the lottery, I'm checking in here for six months!

For our anniversary, I booked my husband and I into one of the airstream trailers at the Grand Daddy hotel. We have an amazing time. Check in was an absolutely breeze and very quick. We were then taken up to the roof top to our trailer (city flights) and there were rose petals scattered leading up to the trailer entrance and throughout the trailer. I had bought him a cheese board for our anniversary (5th wedding anniversary is wood) and the hotel set it up in our room with amazing cheeses, fruit, preserves and nuts. I was really impressed with them. The trailer was amazing - the pictures on the website doesn't do it much justice. It was really clean and well appointed with excellent aircon, which is absolutely needed in the heat of summer. Wi-Fi was a bit sketchy, not the fastest, but it did work. Just a note - I wouldn't stay in the trailer for much longer than two nights (the amount of time we stayed), as it can get a bit cramped, which should be expected. I think you'd probably have more space in one of the normal hotel rooms. The bathroom is well appointed, although the toilet lid is showing signs of wear. As this is in a trailer, just be aware the bathroom is quite "snug". Which is to be expected. None of these are complaints - we had an amazing time. The hotel staff are very professional and helpful - there's nothing too big or small that they won't help you with. We an an excellent time and I would highly recommend one of the trailers for a short holiday with a twist. There isn't a breakfast buffet, which I was quite happy about as those can get a bit boring. Instead, the hotel gives you R75 credit for a breakfast in their eatery Thirty Ate. The menu is al a carte, and pretty decent. I had the pancakes with bacon, fruit and syrup on both mornings, which was lovely. My husband had the Eggs Benedict, which was also really good - much better, in fact, than we had at a very posh restaurant in Camps Bay.

Room Tip: We loved the City Flights trailer, but some of the others were bigger.

Grand Daddy was a little too gritty for our taste but if you like being right in the middle of the action in Cape Town Central on Long Street, with its bars and clubs, it may suit you better. Our guide warned us not to walk on the street after dusk and always take a cab, even for a short distance. So we were not feeling really comfortable with the area.

The hotel has seen better days but was reasonably clean and bed was comfortable. We had room 302 and the problem was it was on the same level as the rooftop bar/club across the way. We had to get up early the next day, but the music (esp. bass) was sooo loud, we couldn't sleep. (Windows are only single pane, so even with the door to the bathroom shut, we felt like we were in the middle of the party.)

Hotel staff is super nice and friendly. We had breakfast in hotel, which was fine. The food at our group dinner was awful but we had limited choices (picked by the tour company) so maybe that wasn't a fair test.

In short, wouldn't stay here again.

Dear MsSommelier,
Thank you for your review, and for choosing the Grand Daddy Hotel for your stay in our beautiful city.
I apologise about the noise you experienced, this was out of our control as it was coming from another building.
We have had all our rooms double glazed, however 301 and 302 are the only two rooms to be completed. How unfortunate that this was not done before your stay. We are redecorating all our rooms in the next few months, which is very exciting.
Thank you for your comment with reference to our staff, as we strive for friendly, personal and efficient service.
Regards,
Brenda

If you're looking to "camp out" in the centre of vibrant Long Street, Cape Town this is the place for you. Supremely comfortable trailer complete with sumptuous bedding. Warm-hearted, friendly staff with easy smiles make ever interaction a joy and the quality breakfast rounded out our stay perfectly.

The Grand Daddy Hotel is a boutique hotel in a renovated building. That brings with it pluses and minuses. The hotel has a single elevator that can be slow. But it also has an intimacy lacking in larger hotels, a style that gives you a feeling of being someplace special and a terrific and helpful staff. (One anecdote -- we arrived at breakfast in the hotel restaurant just after a large group had ordered. The manager immediately came to our table and said that if we were ready to order, she would get our order in ahead of the large group so that we wouldn't be delayed. Without setting back the large group, she was able to deliver our food and don't delay our sightseeing in Cape Town -- a very thoughtful gesture, solely initiated by a staff person.)

The rooms are very comfortable and typically sized for a CBD hotel. Bathroooms are adequately appointed. Again, they are nice, but not luxurious.

A highlight is the rooftop terrace, including a bar and restaurant. This also is the location of the Airstream trailers that are rented as hotel rooms. They may be a fun experience, but they seem very small. They also are set on the perimeter of a busy bar/restaurant area. They struck us as more of an interesting picture than an actual place to spend a night. The terrace, though, is a lovely way to wind down from a day of sightseeing and have a drink before heading out to dinner. In fact, after one long day we did dine at the restaurant and enjoyed a very pleasant and reasonably priced meal, although service was very slow.

The hotel is located on Long Street, a major entertainment area. We were in the hotel on weeknights (Tuesday-Thursday) and did not have any issue with noise. We have been told, though, that Friday and Saturday nights can be very loud.

The hotel is well-located. It is two blocks from Greenmarket Square and the central tourist office (which includes the ticket office for the hop-on/hop-off buses that circulate throughout Cape Town. It is a 15 minute walk to the Robben Island ferry on the VA waterfront. We (husband and wife) felt very safe walking back and forth to the waterfront. And it is on a street with several dining and shopping options.

The hotel was a great value for a CBD hotel, especially with the strong exchange rates for US dollars. Our rate included per-day/per-person voucher of R 75 for menu-ordered breakfast in the hotel restaurant. The amount was more than sufficient for a very adequate meal. Our rate for a "superior room" (including breakfast and taxes) was about $150 USD per day at current exchange rates. We found it to be a very good value.

Dear Tom H, thank you for your review.

Our beautiful building was built as a hotel in the late 1800's and we have the oldest working elevator in Cape Town (however, the mechanisms are new and get serviced regularly!).
Thank you for your comment on the service of the manager on duty as we strive for personal service. Our Food and Beverage Manager is addressing the slow service you experienced.
The Sky Bar on the rooftop is open in summer from 12 noon until 8.30pm which then allows our rooftop Trailer guests to enjoy their privacy and quiet time.
We have also recently double glazed all our windows to eliminate any excess noise that is experienced in the city.

We look forward to welcoming you back to our beautiful country.

Regards,
Brenda
