I am a huge fan of Liam Tomlin’s restaurants. His attention to detail love of the restaurant industry is why I will continue supporting him. So, of course, it was a no-brainer to have dinner at Thali during my recent staycation in Cape Town.

Thali is chef Liam’s take on Indian tapas. It’s not traditional but inspired by the regions and flavours of India. The smells, flavours and tastes are indescribable. Thali is not only beautifully decorated but also has amazing employees and the most deliciously memorable meals. I absolutely enjoyed dining at this restaurant and will for sure be supporting them more often during the winter season! It truly is the best Indian Restaurant in Cape Town.

This is practically an upscale Indian place, which is owned by an all-south African crowd, which makes it feel less authentic. There are no chutney’s, pre-dishes, mango lassi’s or chai teas, all what you can choose for is an thali meal, which is practically an 4 course to share meal with curries/tofu/naan and caters to non vegs and vegs which makes the place not one of my favourite. I disliked quite the location of this place actually, it feels very much an old English cafe -dark, needs renovation, old house- but it drastically need some more authentic touches: even the Indian music was not playing. I feel its very much Punjabi cuisine as well, which is not very much my kind of style as an vegetarian -like Southern Indian cuisine more- so be aware of that, including that the 66 EUR for 2 persons including drinks is quite on the price for what is essentially just an 3 course sit-down-no-reservation-possible kind of restaurant. The crew also needs to be trained more to come up with alternatives and more excentrique style, altough our waiter was very helpful.

After reading reviews and getting excited at the Thali Menu sadly for myself & partner it did not hit the spot when we dined with friends recently

Staff were attentive at the start and informative but as the dining experience moved on service was slow & staff seemed to be hidden or no where for assistance when needed at the table

6 out of 8 ordered Alcohol Free Beers 🍺 and other soft drinks due to restrictions with Government Guidelines sadly no beers as they had sold out , so we all had water during the meal not a great profit earner for any establishment

Food was average apart from the Fresh Mussels at the start which were fabulous but having had “ Thalis “ in Mumbai , Pune and Islamabad during my travels these are served on lovely trays and staff from the kitchen send out lots of dishes being Meat , Fish , Veg and copious amounts of bread to dip and mop sauces the concept here was more Tapas Style in dishes but Spice was lacking and although fresh herbs were used , Salt was over used in the Coconut Mussels & Chicken dish and overall my expectations were deflated

The setting and concept is almost there and personally with a few tweaks it could have been so much better but alas it was just a sadly overpriced average experience and I fully appreciate with COVID regulations and lack of tourists but those diners attending need good service and good food to tell others of there experience 😎
