Having read the different opinions of the bistro here, we decided to try it prior to the theater production. The menu is somewhat limited, but that does not worry me. We decided to try the venison burgers for a quick meal.

The burgers were accompanied by a single bowl of "skinny" chips (fries). It did seem a little sparse as an offering for the price but then I looked at the burger. The venison was ostrich (not sure if it qualifies as venison) but that is where the negatives stop. Firstly the patty was no less than 20mm thick (almost an inch) and cooked perfectly. Consistency light pink right through. It is easy to either over- or under cook a patty, especially such a thick one, and I have to congratulate the chef on this one. My wife's burger was exactly the same. There was a light onion-based sauce I did not quite place, but it worked well to counter the ostrich which can easily be dry.

Service was attentive and friendly, and the M'D was pleasant. I used an app and we spoke about the implications for them. Indeed a pleasing experience. I give it three stars although I would like to give 3,5. It is better than average (3), but not quite 'very good' (4).

I recommend add a little extra to the burger ensemble to increase value for money, but we will be back for more of the same.

As it was my birthday! the staff treated me like royalty. they were very friendly and welcoming(their job) the place was very clean, and as a vegan i was very impressed with what they served as it is very disappointing what we're served at some other places. Will definitely recommend it to my friends and family.

Unfamiliar with restaurants in the area, we thought we could not go wrong by doing the obvious and having dinner at the theatre venue. Sidedish is a mere sideshow as a restaurant. The meal (a roast lamb knuckle with mixed braised vegetables on a cauliflower mash) barely matched the local fastfood standard. The veggies were quite tough and raw; the cauli-mash more akin to smash and the gravy tasted as if from a pre-mix packet. The incessant kitchen chatter did nothing for the dining atmosphere. Were it not for the enthralling theater we enjoyed subsequently, we would have felt it a wasted dining opportunity.

What a disappointment that was!
The place is beautiful and convenient and the service friendly, but that is where the good vibe stopped. The lamb shank was inedibly tough and could have benefitted from several more hours in the oven. We sent ours back after several unsuccessful attempts at cutting into the rubbery offering. Several other (less discerning or more accepting?) patrons were heard asking for sharper knives.
In fairness though, the chef came to apologise personally and gave the replacement meal at a considerable discount. Unfortunately though, the chance at making a good impression was sadly missed. We'll give that one a miss next time.

We have visited this Bistro many times and have always enjoyed the food and the convenience. Last night (Friday), the bistro was very empty, even though the theatre was chock a block full. We were faced with a waitress who was obviously not trained, she may have been nervous, but we could hardly hear her mention any specials. We chose the rump steak, which was ok but the vegetables were ice cold! The other order was the pork belly which also arrived with a spoonful of ice cold mas.... nothing else! We asked for it to be heated but received it not much better. We had a med priced wine and were faced with a bill of just over R600! We won't be going there again!!

Please accept our apology for this.

We are very disappointed to have fallen this far short of your expectations. The manager's service report for that evening did mention that there was a send-back because of food not being hot, but he clearly had a different impression of how successful the remedial actions were.

What you were served was definitely not according to 'spec'. As much as we'd like to, we can't bring back Friday night, but we'd very much appreciate the opportunity of redeeming ourselves, and would like to offer you a complimentary return.

Friday was unusually quiet - we've been close to full most nights of this very popular production.

Please contact theatrebistro@dishfood.co.za to make your return booking. We hope to see you soon.
