This accommodation is not up to scratch!

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 10 Jan 2020
After two weeks on safari in the Kgaligadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies and Kruger National Parks, we were ready for some rest and relaxation at Sun City. We booked the Bush Bungalows several months ahead so that we were assured of a quiet spot away from the crowds in the hotels.
We arrived late afternoon with a huge thunderstorm brewing. We checked into our bungalow, unloaded the car and settled in as quickly as possible. The first thing that was not right was the fridge. It had been turned off at the wall, hidden behind the fridge in an alcove! We did not know where the switch was and so called out the manager who fixed it quickly but it was annoying as we had to wait for it to cool down.
With the light fading fast and the rain threatening, we jumped back into the car and headed up to the hotels to check them out and make a selection for dinner before the light was gone completely and the thunderstorm arrived. The first impression of Sun City was one of total disbelief. It is the most extraordinary place. No expense has been spared but a lot of it is so over the top in extravagance and ostentatious tastelessness that you cannot describe it. It does have a beauty of its own in parts but some it is just out of this world.
We decided to eat in the African buffet which was fun and the food selection was excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive and it was good value. We had driven a very long way that day and were desperate to get to bed and so we headed back to our chalet for much needed sleep.
I awoke at around 5.30am the next morning (as had been our habit on safari) and discovered that the A/C unit had dripped all night long into my carry-on case. The contents were soaking wet! I went for a shower and discovered that it leaked across the floor, parts of the shower unit were loose or missing, the soap dish was hanging down at an angle and would not hold the soap and finally the bath mat was soaked through from the leaking shower. A wooden spar on the towel rail was broken and worst of all, there was no plug for the basin! Having discovered all this in a short space of time I came to the conclusion, having slept very badly on the rock-hard bed, complete with the lumpiest pillows I have ever experienced, that we could not stay the full three nights in that bungalow. I dressed and presented myself at reception at 7 am to await the arrival of the manager.
She was a quarter of an hour late for work, which did not help. Once at her desk I reeled off the faults and demanded, politely, to be accommodated in another bungalow or up at the hotel. It was just not acceptable and not up to scratch. She seemed out of her depth and unable to to deal with any of the complaints about the room. Neither did she apologise until I pointed out that she had not done so!
I suggested that we went for breakfast and whilst we were gone, perhaps she could sort out alternative accommodation. I returned to our bungalow, woke my husband and, having informed him of my discoveries in the short-comings of the room, told him we had to move. The phone rang at that moment and I was asked to call the manager at the Cabanas Hotel to advise her of the issues. I did as asked and after breakfast, having had a conversation with the Cabanas manager en route, we were moved to a ground floor room at the hotel. It was so much more comfortable it was like being in another world. They provided feather pillows, a sheet as well as a duvet for the bed and later that day a bottle of wine and some nibble appeared as an apology. It was such a waste of time having to complain and then move but they must learn that they cannot take good money for accommodation if it is not up to standard. The bush bungalows, beautifully sited, are just not good enough.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms at Cabanas are more private than the ground floor rooms

We booked a bungalow for our stay near Pilanesberg, the price was much better than the other Sun City options. It wasn't available for the last night of our stay, so we stayed at the nearby Kingdom Resort. However, we were still able to hang around Sun City, eat and use the water park after our checkout for no extra cost. The water park was fairly crowded, but the adults only Roman-style pool section was much more relaxed and comfortable.

The bungalow was traditional style with a thatched roof - pretty neat for our stay. Spacious circular bedroom and large bathroom. Good AC, although there were some evening power outages, but that was affecting the whole area. Nice little outdoor sitting area to hang out at in the evening and watch the mongoose hang out. They seemed to help keep insects down.

Breakfast was included at the little restaurant area next to the bungalows. There is a continental spread plus some meats, cheeses, and yogurt, and then you can select from a couple of breakfast entree options - bacon, sausage, egg, with chakalaka and fries side options. By picking a different one of these options each day we didn't get bored. The crocodile gardens are visible from the breakfast area which was really neat in the morning. We did the included crocodile show a couple of times because we enjoyed it so much!

We had access to many other amenities at Sun City. There is an office by the bungalows where you can make bookings and order shuttles that take you around the resort. We booked our game drives here. The shuttles were not the fastest, and being at the end of the resort near the entrance we didn't seem to be high on the shuttle priority list. But the drivers were friendly and helpful. Early in the morning, I drove to a few different parts of the resort to go for walks, but driving and parking would be tougher in busier hours.

We used the pool at the next door Cabanas resort, which had plenty of space and poolside service. We especially enjoyed the Shebeen - an authentic experience and great braai food, and a very kind waitress. Next door to the Shebeen, we enjoyed the cultural village experience. The highest end restaurants were unavailable when we were there. We tried a couple more casual places - I liked the Mozambican dishes at Calisto's and the bunny chow at Simply Asia (Simply Asia was also the only place open during the power outage because they could cook with a gas wok.) Steers and Spur were OK but not as remarkable. We were disappointed not to be able to eat at the Palace restaurant, but one of the drivers gave us a little tour of the tower and the famous restaurant during the day.

Overall, we got a great deal and enjoyed our stay. There were a few closures and outages, but the employees really provided great service.

Lovely place to be on our first night in South Africa. Beautiful gardens and all types of birds around the accommodation. Rooms are lovely, very spacious, modern but with an African Bush feel. Breakfast was good and cooked to order. All the staff were amazing and very helpful. I liked this place as it was quite and hidden away from all of what Sun City offers and only a few minutes to the casinos and waterpark.

Added bonus you can visit the Croc Farm which is based at the Bush Bungalows for absolutely free..

I loved this place as much as my partner.

      Comfy bed. Good breakfast.
Close proximity to other bungalows but sufficient to our needs.
Requires maintenance & better lighting in cottage. Renovations appear to be taking place.
Fridge had no shelves but this was soon rectified.
      Shower spills water on floor.

Room tip: Our cottage was tucked in a corner but was quiet and served the purpose. Clean, relatively comfortable and well priced.

We had a really really great break, the breakfast was stunning, ample, the staff were very pleasant and helpful for the duration of our stay. Our bungalow was quaint and suited our needs to a tee.... I know a lot of people complained about water pressure but we had none of those issues, showering was fine and we were lucky to get a bath, which was simply divine. An aircon kept us cool on the hot Rustenburg nights. The Valley of the Waves was awesome, the shuttles, simply brilliant, as I never had to move my car once and when my son wanted to do his own thing, he had access to simply call for a shuttle and sort his own entertainment out. We had a fantastic time and never really had to leave the resort once as everything was on site should we have forgotten stuff. The only thing I would have liked different would have been more regular rubbish pick up at the Valley, but that's more the "pigs" they call guests, issues then Sun City's. Was not fun going into the wave pool with dirty nappies on the beach, yuck! However, if you went to the Valley by 9, it was clean and tidy.
