Great Looking at The Hole

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 13 Feb 2017
Enjoyed two nights in Kimberly. The hotel is great and the location makes it easy to walk to The Hole. The room was clean and comfortable and the view interesting. The staff were most helpful. The Hole Museum next door was worth the trip and the ride on the vintage tram was fun.
Date of stay: February 2017
Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking The Hole.

Kimberley is filled with history. I was surprised to learn that it was the first town in South Africa to install electric street lighting. The hotel is adjacent to the Big Hole museum so it;s very convenient. The mine tour, tram rides and the walk through the "old city" were all most interesting and educational.

Drive around town and visit the Mcgregor Museum, Mosques and there's a nice park as well which is nice for the kids.

It's a long drive to get there, but it's well worth it. If you appreciate history then this must be on your shortlist.

Stayed here for two nights. The reception staff was courteous and helpful with questions about the local area. The room was comfortable and quiet.

The breakfast buffet was average, but there were flies all over the cereals, breads and cold cuts. Both mornings it took a long time for the waitress to bring a cup of coffee. And she made it feel like she was doing me a favor getting me one! There were minimal selections to choose from and they were average at best. Due to the poor service I chose not to eat an evening meal in the restaurant.

A great place to stay and reasonably priced. Excellent, clean, historic setting and efficient staff. The location by the big hole makes the hotel a must visit. This is the only hole next to the world largest man made hole on earth. The staff is pleasant the rooms modern, clean and spacious. The hotel has captured the history of the place and the ambience is historic. I will always use this hotel when I am passing by Kimberley.

Room tip: Rooms on the outside block have a lovely view.

I had booked an executive suite, which was more expensive than the standard room. The suite was half the size of the standard room I moved to, and the suite had only a shower, so I downgraded as could not understand this. The room we were given was good, except there was a dirty coffee cup on window sill and it was not very clean. The food in the restaurant was between below average and average.

We are traveling around South Africa. After a 4 hour drive from the Johannesburg are we arrived in Kimberley, a city of 250,000 people. There isn't much in the area, but Kimberley is known for Diamond Mines. There are many huge holes from past mining operations. Directly behind the Protea is the largest, (The Big Hole) Its huge and almost scary to be so close. The Hotel feels like an old place, and it basically is. They have kept the historic theme and yet the rooms are modern and up to date. This is a very nice place, for a real inexpensive price. Definitely worth staying here if you are passing through. A great staff and nice room.
