“Recharging in the Karoo”

A few years back we went to stay in the chalets in the Tankwa Karoo. Beautifully decorated, candle lights and gas shower. Absolute a blissful place if you want to sync with your inner self again.

“A Place to find yourself!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2017 via mobile

This is a beautiful place, as describe in other reviews, a place with stark differences, extreme contrasts and endless starlit nights! We stayed at Paulshoek for 2 nights and Elandsberg 1 night. Paulshoek has got a waterhole very close by the cottage which offers glorious sightings of animal and birds coming for a drink. We are birders and enjoyed the Karoo birds tremendously with 14 brand new sightings. Both camps had no electricity and no cellphone coverage, supplied with gas stoves, gas water heaters, candles and lamps. At both camps mice were a big problem, getting to your food if not packed away securely. Kitchens lacks bottle openers, strainers etc. plus not enough towels were given for the amount of people staying. Roads are heavily corrugated and makes it very difficult to drive even at a slow pace following birds and/or animals. Oudebaaskraal dam is a lovely place for birders and staff of the park recommended excellent birding around the dam, but sadly one cant get close to the dams edge for observing and identifying any birds. Also the dam is renown for the yearly birding bonanza, but not one single birding hide is to be seen. Staff quarters and old machines/equipment is all over to be seen and could and should be hidden more effectively from guests sight, as this is not a pretty picture and leave you with a feeling of neglect! With very little effort this park can be transferred to the gem of Sanparks.

“A hidden gem, Kalahari at its best, make sure to drive in from the northern end, spectacular”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 December 2016

My wife and I completed our three week tour of Okavango and Kalahari at Tankwa, hugely impressed by the serenity, peace, landscapes and animals. Stayed at Paulshoek cottage, 10 min drive from the park reception. Stayed one night, could have easily stayed 3 or 4. Unique scenery, our drives were enjoyable. The drive out towards Cape Town was spectacular. A wonderful part of the world.

“Wonderful place to unwind in solitude”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2016

If you love quite and isolated regions this place! No cell phone reception, internet connection only at the reception once a data voucher is purchase. Roads are not great, make sure you have a spare tyre. There is no big game to spot but beautiful open landscape and nature to be admired. I stayed at De Zypher Cottage which offers 2 bed rooms and to verandas so you can always find a sunny or shady spot. Kitchen offers everything one needs for self-catering. At reception little booklets about the people who farmed in the region and about geology are sold. Easy read and gives a better understanding to the area. Take everything you need along and have a most relaxed time. Very peaceful environment.

“Quiet solitude away from the hustle and bustle”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 November 2016

This reserve will not be everybody's cup of tea. You will not find the big 5 game animals here, in fact a very small variety of game. Bird viewing depending upon the season is apparantly good, but that is not our interest. Roads are badly corrugated and you will find all the rattles and squeaks in your vehicle and any loose parts will fall off.
Peace and tranquility are guaranteed and this reserve is ideal for a quiet breakaway. Elandsberg is a great camp, but no electricity. Gas stove and paraffin lamps !
