My husband and I booked our trip a year ago to celebrate our 46th wedding anniversary; just the two of us going to one of our favourite places. But accommodation left much to be desired.
Bush Tent No 24: There was an overbearing smell of bat droppings in the little kitchen on our deck. It was terrible and we found piles of bat poo on top of the kitchen cupboard, which hadn’t been cleared in months and which was made worse by the sun. There was no way we could use that little kitchen.
We were temporarily moved to a hut, which while bat poo musty, it was tolerable. The old airconditioner sat above a split conditioner and was sealed off with insulation tape. It was very shabby.
Our next accommodation was River View Tent No 18. While it had a lingering bat poo aroma, it was a vast improvement. However it was sad to see that maintenance of these units was poor. It had a broken fascia board and a step on the deck which needed replacing was patched up with screws. The canvasses on these old tents need washing.
Our final move was to Bush Tent 6 which was great. Unfortunately the sliding door’s lock was broken and maintenance came through and adjusted the lock rather than replacing the catch.
Our neighbours at River Tent No 19 we’re horrified to find the kitchen cupboard broken and the drawers packed on top of one another.
The KNP is the country’s crown jewel and it is sad to see how this camp’s accommodation is on a fast decline.
We approached the manager who told us that the camp has had a problem with bats to the extent that they have moved the bat boxes. But we could see the bats were clearly very comfortable in the rafters of the thatch reservation/restaurant building.
He was surprised when we showed him the ongoing complaints about his camp, both on Trip Advisor and Lekker Slaap pages.
Clearly this isn’t the first complaint and he blamed it on staff issues. Not our problem when we were paying R1900/day for 10 days.
I hate to say that management is incompetent in many aspects as are the 10 board members. Why 10 I wonder? The park is a gold mine so why is refurbishment so poor?

'Kruger' is a beast...and full of them too! A very unique safari experience in which you can do it so many ways: join a tour, join a night and/or sunrise walk inside the park, stay at one of the many bush camps, or like we did simply drive yourself around at your own pace on the paths/roads you choose.
It's also unique in that you will be driving on a small, quiet dirt road, then 2 minutes later - after slowing dodging an elephant, gigantic giraffe, or troop of zebras - you're pulling into a fenced camp with petrol station and Wimpy's burger chain! Somewhat surreal, but it all comes together beautifully.
One thing to note: while you certainly CAN get around much of the park in any size/type of car, I would recommend a large 4x4. We got stuck in thick mud and two families rushed over to help push us out! Plus having an elevated vehicle allows for better photo ops.
Alas, visiting 'Kruger' is a lifetime experience so choose YOUR way and soak it up!

Leopard sighting! We got to see the last of the big five we hadn’t seen in our trip to South Africa. Also saw plenty of other wildlife. A bit more commercialized than some of the other safaris. Lots of paved roads and ground to cover.

Astounding! They say “Kruger Never Disappoints” and it’s true. Absolutely breath taking units beauty. The wild animals roam free and safe. I do wish they would consider removing the rhino horns as an additional safety step against poachers. Between Kruger and the game preserve where we stayed, we easily saw “The Big Five” and more. Give yourself at least two days in Kruger. We can’t wait to go back.

The visit to the park was a highlight. The ability to view the wildlife up close and to take some amazing pictures was overwhelming.

The infrastructure, roads, test locations and accommodation excellent. Easy to find nice places to eat and drink at very fair cost and of good quality.

The park was not so busy during my visit and this was welcome.

Good visit and provided an opportunity to see, hear and experience many aspects of nature not possible at home.

Well worth a visit.
