We were two travellers very excited to travel up the Sani Pass in November 2016, but wanting too see a bit more of Lesotho than just the Highest Pub in Africa.
Looking around the internet, it seemed all the tour operators were offering the same thing: day-trips for people looking to cross the border and "tick the box." Finally we found Roof of Africa, who offered more - much more!
From start to finish, ROA provided a faultless service: stress-free, friendly, informative, convenient, and reasonably priced. Organising trip details and paying the deposit was easily done online, and Emile was always so quick to reply to emails and answer questions. He was more than happy to arrange for everything exactly the way we wanted! It was a bespoke holiday experience.
We were picked up directly from our hotel in Durban (very convenient for us, as we were without our own transport) and driven to Underberg by Beki, who taught us a lot about Durban and South Africa on the way. Peter took over in Underberg for the drive up the Pass, and it was great to have a Lesotho citizen taking care of us the next couple of days, giving us so much added insight into his beautiful country and intriguing culture.
The drive up the Sani Pass was spectacular and thrilling - as everyone who goes up and down will attest to! - but then we got to see more than the typical day-tripper when ROA took us further into the country to Mokhotlong. It was a long drive, but the scenery was breathtaking and Peter kept us informed and entertained the whole way.
We didn't have time in Mokhotlong for much more than lunch - in retrospect, the drive could've been significantly reduced if we had eaten somewhere closer. This would have given us more time to relax and enjoy where we were staying in the Sani Mountain Lodge. But Emile is very much open to suggestions and will tailor your trip exactly how you want!
After lunch we went pony-trekking! It was a short loop - about one hour - and eventually enjoyable once we got the hang of it! As amateurs, it took us a while to relax on the pony - if you go, two words of advice: trust the pony!!! It won't fall. And remember to look around at the scenery, not where the pony is stepping : ) Again, it was great to talk to our pony trekking guide, who told us so much about Lesotho culture and the Lesotho people.
Our accommodation at the Sani Mountain Lodge was amazing - one of the most special hotels we had ever stayed at. Dinner and breakfast the next day was included in the tour - in both cases, delicious and massive portions! We also had a guided hike after breakfast the next morning. We were running a bit short on time so we took a short-cut, but it was definitely worth it, as the views were phenomenal!
After the hike, we drove back down the Pass and had a lunch at a quirky farm in Underberg before being dropped off directly at King Shaka International for our flight to Cape Town!
From pick up to drop off, ROA planned and delivered every detail as per what we had arranged with them - it was the highlight of our 3 week trip in South Africa! The only thing I might have changed is to have extended our time in Lesotho one extra day. We were on a tight schedule and wanted to pack a lot in, but Mokhotlong, the pony trek and the hike all really deserved a few extra hours.
Thanks ROA! We had an amazing, amazing time!!!
