A few hours spent at the Phansi Museum does wonders for the soul. The visuality of our history is important. As South Africans and especially Durbanites we should all pass by, To be able to understand the very many images we saw when we were young but never understood. Great for senior primary school children.

A gem very close to the city center, the Phansi museum uniquely exhibits artifacts that reflect the cultural kaleidoscope of the KZN area and the rest of the country. From ancient/traditional daily household and kitchen wares, to clothing and jewelry and even weaponry, all items in the museum are well restored and well kept. Likewise their uses are well explained, juxtaposed to their cultural significance and historical value. One of the highlights of the museum is the colorful life-sized dolls on display that show traditional outfits and jewelry with pieces from daily life. A very important museum that should be on your to do list when visiting this side.

Having read about the Phansi Museum in Durban while planning our trip to South Africa, I couldn't have imagined what a jewel we would come upon when we toured this interesting museum. Tucked away in a residential area the museum is filled with a plethora of truly exquisite artifacts from Zulu as welll as other South African indigenous cultures. The collection is housed in an old Victorian home transformed with the love, passion and respect for the history of these cultures by Paul Mikula. Paul welcomed us and took us on a once in a lifetime museum experience. His stories, knowledge of the art and craft with which he clearly holds so close to his heart and his generosity is something I will never forget. If you are in Durban, take the time to visit Phansi Museum and tell others about it too! Thank you Paul!!

Lots of beadwork, bridal costumes. Staff friendly and helpful, perhaps could have been more informative.

I am not a huge crafts follower, but I still thought this place was great. They have a number of costumes and other day-to-day crafts. To visit, you should call and make an appointment for a (short) tour -- the website doesn't say so, but it seems like they prefer to do 30-45 minute tours of the house and holdings. This is a fairly small museum. I wouldn't imagine spending more than about an hour there. I parked right outside on the street -- there is space, but also a number of cars parked in the area. It cost 40 rand per person for the visit. There are stairs, and one narrow stairway in particular to navigate.
