We've been here on several occasions and have never been overly impressed with food nor service. The last straw was our most recent visit when we ordered a pot of tea with a muffin and a scone. The place wasn't crowded but the tea seemed to take ages to arrive. The muffin and scone took even longer - certainly not because of any attempt at presentation or decoration - both were cold and slightly stale and simply plonked on to bare white plates. Each came with catering-issue pats of butter and jam - it looked like everything had been grabbed off shelves, tossed on to plates and sent out. To top up our (by now) half-cold tea we asked for some extra boiling water, for which we were charged R8.The rather grubby fold-over tea cosy had two Velcro strips hanging by single threads. Service was slow and apathetic, waiters seem to prefer loitering and chatting than keeping an eye on their customers. We eventually had to ask two of them (neither one ours) for our bill. The management seriously needs to get its act together, but perhaps it doesn't care about the abysmal image it projects. My advice to visitors is to rather buy an ice cream - it's far better value for money.

We are most disturbed by your review. We wish you had approached a manager to deal with your concerns personally, as we don't know when you visited, so as to properly investigate, although we assume it might have been on a Tuesday with our senior scones & muffins special, with the past one being very busy with the grandparents bringing all their little grandchildren. Our scones and muffins are baked freshly on the day and are not microwaved to heat unnaturally as it spoils. Most establishments now serve extras hygienically - "catering-issue" butter, jams and sugars - especially being in a bio-diversity reserve where bees and insects abound organically, and who knows who might have stuck a finger in the jam bowl. Due to people sneaking in their own teabags or "sharing" a one-cup teapot, we charge extra to cover the cost of the water, additional milk, sugar & honey used - but this would have been credited had you approached the manager - we really are not unreasonable. Please in future ask the waiter to bring your tea & scone together, to avoid your tea being cold before you get your scone. We could unfortunately not find the 'damaged' hand-crafted tea cosy you refer to. We strive to please all our patrons and accommodate all persons so we truly are sorry that you had a bad experience, especially when most of what we get are compliments and habitual patrons.

We decided to try this restaurant situated in the garden. Unfortunately my wife's toasted bacon and egg meal was pretty horrible.

My Norwegian salmon on the other hand wasn't bad.

While service was friendly it was slow.

Maybe it was just a bad day. It had been raining earlier.

I will definitely go back, those gardens are just so awesome and this restaurant is just sooo convenient. Somewhere in that menu there is a real winner waiting to be discovered.

Thank-you very much for your constructive feedback, it is much appreciated. Not sure when you were here but we have been blessed with a busy holiday season, so we would like to apologize for the slow service. There is no reason that a sandwich should not be appetising and we hope that you brought it to attention of management. We certainly will endeavour to take this opportunity to up our game and look forward to you enjoying a memorable experience in the future

Well after walking a lot around the only thing we wanted to do was sit eat and rest.

The food in the restaurant was good not expensive but the service was a bit introspective. They did not have much patience with us (foreigners). Perhaps is the result of how the owner/manager runs the place...

If you decide to stop it will be a good experience but there is room for improvements.

Had their buffet meal there one Sunday. Maybe we were a bit late, or they were too busy. A number of the dishes were empty and when asking for a refill it took ages to replenish them. There was nothing spectacular about any of the dishes. We went there to scout for a Wedding venue. What better place to have a reception. The quality of the food was just not good enough for us to choose them.
To befair, I spoke to someone recently who said that the Buffet had improved amazingly. New chef??
I will have to try them again.

Thank-you so much for taking the time out to visit us and review - feedback is vital. We can only imagine that you might have arrived late, as the buffet is only served until 2pm and at which time we try not to refill. We are well known for our country home-style cooking and it is amazing, but after having stood in chaffing dishes for 2 hours, can seem unappetizing and why we always suggest to our bookings to arrive early. We truly are sincerely sorry for your experience and that we couldn't share your forever memories, but we do hope that you will visit us again on a less formal occasion, resulting in a delightful experience.

Eagle's Fare is situated within the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg. It has indoors and outdoors sitting areas, the outdoors one being sunny and the indoors one very cosy. It is open from 09:00 to 16:30 daily. On Tuesdays they offer a Pensioner's Special whereby one can get a cup of coffee/tea and a scone/muffin for less than R25. They have a special venison pie for those who like game meat. It is worthwhile to have a snack or meal there when visiting the Botanical Gardens. The service is friendly and there are plenty of umbrellas should the sun bother you whilst sitting outside.
