Over the past weekend I took a family member of mine here from the Cape to Rietvlei, only about 15 minutes drive from Pretoria. An awesome way to spend a day out in Nature and seeing beautiful birds and various animals. We saw Rhino, buck, zebras and other small creatures. For a photographer, it was a good day's photo shooting. The roads are decent, even the sand roads, the habitat is quite flat in most parts so easy to see. At the coffee shop/picnic spot, lovely under the trees. The service was not great, nor the toasted sandwiches that arrived with chips instead of salad, but the trip was very worthwhile and the rangers are knowledgeable and very happy to chat. We saw a rhino on the road that looked half dead and we asked about it and he told us about old Oortjies who lies in that spot all the time sleeping, but then does roam around and to our relief we saw him roaming around later! Very caring staff. The Rhinos are de-horned there, due to a poaching incident where 3 were killed. A bit weird to photograph without horns, but, if it saves lives ..! Well worth the trip for a lovely day visit into Nature. Only R20 pp for pensioners. The game drive into the lion enclosure is R55 for pensioners and R80 for others. Did not do it, but, the ranger was very eager to tell us about it and next time will do it. The lions there are all rescue lions which is brilliant.
