I really love Matsuya. Once you step into the restaurant, you really feel like you are in Japan. The food is amazing and the waiting staff is friendly.

I especially love the warm towel they provide before your meal to clean your hands.

There are lots of places serving Japanese and Asian cuisine around. You try one, you've tried them all. All sell the same Westernised versions of noodles and sushi. Not so Matsuya. Although not Japanese owned, this is as close to authentic Japanese cuisine you will find in Pretoria.

Where else can you order dishes like Shabu Shabu, Sukiyaki, fried salmon belly, ramen noodles and fried eel? Yes, it might not be the cheapest sushi around by any means.

The service might not be the fastest at times, but it is worth the wait. I've been going to Matsuya when they were still situated in Waterkloof and they don't disappoint. If you find the menu daunting, order one of the set menus on your first time. It will give you a taste of things to come.

The food here is really excellent. We've been to Japan and this is very authentic. The menu is enormous and difficult to sift through. The staff are terrible and borderline unfriendly. When I asked what a hot pot is she told me 'it's a pot that is hot'. I also asked for recommendations due to the lack of descriptions and she told us 'sorry she actually hasn't eaten anything on this menu'. There was also an arrogant foreigner who was having a live video conference behind us for the duration of the time. I only mention this because the staff told us he's a regular. Not recommended unless you want great Japanese food but can ignore bad service. Expensive... almost R700 for sushi and mains.

Came hear for lunch and there was no one in hear. We wanted to eat off the tepinyaki grill. But had to wait for them to turn it on, which took some time.
The food was a little pricey for what it was, and there were set menu options which was also very pricey.
The food itself was ok but nothing to write home about.

Matsuya is one of a very few places that offers authentic japanese food around. One of our favourites is the buckweed soup pot with tempura. Definite an experience not to miss if you enjoy authentic japanese food
