Nothing to do here unless a fan of South African culture, history or colonial architecture. Be aware of possible civilian protest.

This is the official seat of government in South Africa, and well worth a visit if in Pretoria. It's well known in its own right, but since 2014, vast numbers go there to see the magnificent statue of Nelson Mandela, erected after his death. It's enormous and incredibly imposing. Simply, a wonderful monument to an amazing man. Don't miss it!

Visiting the Union Buildings feels like country duty for South Africans but even if you are visiting from another country, this would be an important place to visit to know more about South African history. The buildings were designed by an architect called Herbert Baker, who did a few other monumental buildings in South Africa. Mr Baker loved hills and always had a hill as a backdrop of a building or would build on the hill itself - hence the Union Building. The building sits on one of the former fortresses and opposite two other fortresses. There is a municipality bylaw which prevents anyone building a building that would obstruct direct visibility between the 3 fortresses. The gardens are still well maintained and members of the public are allowed to picnic on the gardens at no cost. The greatest excitement is taking pictures with the Nelson Mandela status which happens to be the biggest bronze statue in Africa at the moment. A great place to visit, great history.
