So.... there are lots of things that let the stadium down a bit, the facilities are somewhat dated... read more
I went to watch the first day of the test vs Australia. I did not buy tickets in advance because I did my research and basically it was confirmed that unless England are playing there isn't a huge turnout.
I lined up at the ticket box outside the gate and purchased a ticket with my credit card for about 160R. This ticket was a seat and right on the fence.
To purchase beer you need to exchange cash / or use a credit card for tokens. You then take the tokens to a beer bar and 1 token = 1 beer. It worked out that the beers were about 25R per 500 ml beer.
My advice would be to go straight to a token stand and purchase a number of tokens as the line does get quite long.
There were plenty of food choices at reasonable prices. The toilets were also fine, I think given that it was cricket and not very busy I did not have to line up at all - which is shocking news for a female at an event haha.
The view was amazing. Even if you weren't into cricket you would enjoy sitting there with the mountain and brewery in the background.
There were 3 areas that are grass so if you're super prepared you can take your own chair or blanket and sit there. Otherwise the seats were fine too.
We attended the test match between South Africa and Australia.
The location of the stadium is superb - it is easy to get to and pretty easy to find a parking place. Some of the views from within the ground are amazing - if you want to sit watching the cricket and looking at Table Mountain you really need to be on the south side of the ground.
We sat in the Railway stand with the mountai behind us - from our seats you get a great view Square of the wicket which makes you appreciate the speed of the fast bowlers! The stand is uncovered so you spend all the day in the sun - come prepared with sun cream and a hat.
The atmosphere is amazing - there is always a good crowd and plenty of banter throughout the day.
Choice of food vendors is great and the food is not expensive.
It's not quite what you expect at a cricket game, but nevertheless fun to have an audience which gets actively engaged in the game. More like football than cricket, but it's a blast. Easy access by road or rail, plenty of exits to minimize crowding, and typical stadium food. Then of course there is Table Mountain as a backdrop if the game gets dull!
Newlands Cricket is a special ground. Not only is it a fantastic spot to watch a game but the views of the mountain are stupendous.
T20 match South Africa vs India. The best stadium for cricket I have ever visited. Table Mountain in the distance is a treat and quite a distraction from the game it self. Typically for a stadium like this there are places to buy food, beer and merchandise.
we'd managed to secure tickets for the ODI S.A. v India match and cheekily went to the members enclosure and asked for an upgrade. for R200 each we got entry that entitled us to a really good shaded seat and access to the food and drinks - all reasonably priced. The atmosphere was great and although the match wasn't great as S.A. were annihilated everyone we met -bitb staff and public alike - were really friendly .
