Owner description: The Home of Great South African Beer - Since 1820. Visit us, tour the brewery and taste our award-winning beers. Nestled at the foot of Devil's Peak and neighbour to the historic rugby & cricket grounds, is the oldest operating brewery in South Africa and the home of great South African beer - Newlands Brewery. Lovers of delicious, natural refreshment are invited to experience a taste of brewing history, followed by a look into modern-day brewing methods, by joining a fully guided tour of Newlands Brewery. The tour follows the journey of beer from its beginning as a grain, to its end as a well crafted, ice-cold treasure, fittingly ending with a beer tasting and a couple of pints in the brewery's historic underground pub.

We booked a tour online for noon on a Friday and it was a perfect rainy afternoon activity. The tour covers the history of the brewery from the early 1800s through modern day when it became part of SABMiller. Parts of the tour are quite noisy so headsets are provided. I've been on a number of brewery tours before and what fascinated me was the portion of the production line which cleans used bottles. I also loved the tasting at the end of the tour where we learned the proper way to taste beer and had the opportunity to socialize with others on the tour.

With great excitement we showed up at the brewery on a cold and windy day! All geard up...safety goggles and all we started one of the most enjoyable and informative tours on our trip in CT! We had a fantastic tour guide that really new her stuff! She could answer every question and and enjoyed presenting the tour to us! A great beer tasting followed and we found ourselves sitting in their tasting area for about 4 hours enjoying a great atmosphere and good company! A must when you are in CT!

MY TIP. wear closed shoes and comfortable shoes (according to my phone we walked 1.7km) . It was a great experience and not just for the beer-lover. Well i am a 'Kaapie" and i received a history lesson about cape town that i found very interesting and informative. So once the the history lesson is done and the you start to walk through the factory. I was amazed by the size of the tanks (i am a technical guy) and how they use the same ingredients for such a huge variety of beers that we know.
Here is a little secret try to answer the questions of the tour guide and you might just get a extra free beer. So once you went through the whole process and completed the tour you get to taste the difference of the various beers. After this you are welcome to enjoy two free beers on SAB (or free cooldrink) and socialize with the group.

If you have some free time on a Saturday morning and would like to be blown away with facts and history, you might want to have a look at it.

This brewery is a lovely one to visit and made more so by the talks we had. The volumes of beer distributed are astounding and watching the forklifts load trucks an experience not to be missed.

I booked well in advance, unfortunately due to minor communication problems I was privileged to a solo trip round the brewery , to which I must express my thanks to Alexia for her kindness to take the time and trouble to be so kind and considerate.
This must be a excursion not to be missed for anybody visiting the Cape,
My tip buy a tourist rail ticket then make a day off it, brewery cricket and rugby stadiums ,then the Brass Bell for lunch , Navel museum Boulders Beach penguins and it's all so cost effective (Cheap)
