I must say up front that there are a lot of flies here. Big problem for lunch, less so for supper.
With this out of the way, this is a beautiful hotel with gorgeous rooms in secluded settings. The rooms are very spacious and extremely comfortable and are beautifully clean. The bath in the lounge is unusual but works well with the decor and layout.
Recommended.

We booked a conference for 14 people. 12 of us stayed over and two people joined the next morning. The food and accommodation is good. But the experience is completely spoiled by a constant battle with flies. Nothing works to keep them away. The staff have to "swing" the trays with food to try not to present the next course with a bunch of flies on it. It does not work. All staff and management seem to have given us on the problem completely - shrugging their shoulders. We will never go back unless they solve this.

Dear Emarie,

Thank you for your feedback.

The problem which the entire residential estate on which Forum Homini is located is experiencing is one which we are tackling aggressively on numerous fronts – environmentally, via the local council and legally – in collaboration with the Letamo Residents Association.

While these discussions with the neighbours responsible for the problem are underway we are also doing everything possible to reduce the presence of flies in our immediate restaurant and hotel environment, in consultation with pest exterminators and environmental consultants. While our negotiations to have the root of the problem dealt with is ongoing, we remain fully committed to providing the very best possible experience under these difficult conditions.

Two separate reviews would probably be a fairer way to do this. The hotel was lovely: great rooms, fantastically friendly and efficient service at check in, and an amazing set up for a stay. The only blight on the hotel's side was the turndown service: afternoon tea used the cups in the room, and these weren't replaced. This is minor, and is testament to how good that part of the stay was that it was the biggest thing that went wrong.

The restaurant (Roots) was another story.

It's possible that our expectations were excessive, but we were anticipating a fine dining tasting menu. Something special.

What we got was average.

At an average hotel, with no expectations of an awesome siding experience, the meal would still have been underwhelming. Mushy peas soup had a skin on it. Medium rare fillet steak was served medium-sized done. And the wine pairing wasn't paired; you simply had a few tested of different wine poured with you meal.

Granted, there couldn't really be a true pairing, because the food didn't have enough character to pair to. The best you could do is white wine with fish, red wine with steak, and a dessert wine.

Breakfast, billed as a 5 course meal, was a step down on dinner.

Store bought museli (not even good quality store bought museli at that), average peach yoghurt, heated (not fresh tasting) pastries and slimy mushrooms.

Again: if you weren't expecting a great meal, and simply wanted some food, then this will do, but not at these prices: the rooms can't save it from not being value for money.

I think they owe it to themselves to deliver a dining experience. Not a menu that peaks at average.

Good friends gave us an anniversary gift:
One night at Forum Homini Hotel, including supper and breakfast.

It was the most wonderful gift we ever received! We were received like royalty. Service was excellent and personal and loaded with complementary gifts. The atmosphere was peaceful and romantic. The setting, although luxurious is close to nature and from our room we could identify many birds and even had a visit from a mongoose. The sunset over the dam was indescribable... and then the restaurant... A heavenly six course meal bound us together in a three hour conversation.
To top off a perfect evening, we relaxed in room 12 with a warm bubbling jacuzzi.
The next morning we were treated with a five course breakfast, red finches chirping and puffing up themselves to impress the ladies, right next to us at the water's edge. The waiters were friendly, knew the dishes and explained it very well.

This experience at Forum Homini Hotel had all the ingredients for the making of memories!
We will never forget this one!

Room tip: Room 12 has a jacuzzi

This was probably my 9th weekend stay which was simply amazing in true Forum style. It was perfect from the start. It truly brought back many fond memories that we have had at Forum previously. The attention to detail, specially printed vegetarian menu’s, petals on our table, nuts instead of biltong in our room, chocolates at our turndown…..this is the Forum i knew and loved.

I huge shout out must go to the chef. The vegetarian menu is a triumph. We enjoyed it so much, we didn’t even realise that we had come to the end of our courses. It was packed with flavour, textures and thought. Care has been taken to even pair specific wines with the food, as our wine pairings were different from the meat menu. He has developed some signature dishes that outshines a few restaurants that we have eaten at that are known for their vegetarian/vegan menus. It was superb.

The team needs a pat on the shoulder. they work well to delivery a great experience for their guests. its a great value for money weekend getaway. I highly recommend it,

Room tip: All the rooms are the same. Private, large and luxurious.
