A Jo'burg Oasis!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Apr 2024
We stayed two nights to start our South African and Turkish family adventure! Having only 1 full day in Jo'burg, we wanted to just stick close to the airport, but did not want a typical airport hotel. African Rock Hotel & Spa checked all of our boxes!

After LONG travel, they had a driver pick us up upon arrival at the airport and upon arrival at the property our room was ready. Check-in was quick and efficient and our family room (room 11) was a pleasant surprise, as it was large and gave us plenty of space (4 & 7 year old boys in tow!).

The property is small in size, but large in character and charm! A very intimate setting with plenty of places to relax - from your room, to the pool, to the upstairs reading/game lounge there is a spot for everyone. To top everything off, since we booked direct with them, we had a short welcome massage for both of us upstairs in the spa area - it was delightful! One of the only down falls of our stay is we did not have enough time to enjoy a full spa service!

As for food, we did not have a bad meal! Being such a small property, the staff or even the chef as it was one afternoon, comes and takes our orders. They offer unique local dishes, as well as some more standard fare. Both breakfast and dinners were delicious!!!

We did take advantage of a tour through African Rock - a full day exploring the cradle of humankind area. I will review Johan, our guide, and his outfit African Timeout in a separate review, but he was world class, thus I would not hesitate to let African Rock help with your tour needs!

The gift shop at AR is also a pleasant surprise, as for a boutique property, they had some really unique shopping offerings. Additionally, the owner does art on the side and most of the pieces throughout the rooms and property are hers - and available for purchase!

We would 100% stay again when/if passing through Jo'burg! A pleasant thanks to the entire African Rock team! It was a GREAT start to our 17 days away from home!

The beauty of this hotel lies in its grounds and its cuisine. In fact, I was a little put off by the cramped dining area and definitely by the gray carpet and somewhat tacky furnishings of Room 1 when we arrived at night. The next morning, I changed my tune. The gardens are thickly lush and well-tended. The outdoor tables are comfortable and, at dinner, a lovely fire crackled.

We actually felt like we had a private chef since the only other couple ate early before an international flight. We stopped by the homey kitchen to discuss her recommendations. My extremely tender springbok was from a local farm. The veggies were perfect as was the sauce. Dessert was delicious. My husband enjoyed his fish, not at all overcooked as can happen, and the papaya salsa served with it.

In the morning the lattes were excellent and my husband pronounced the everything omelette the best he’d ever eaten.

Not least, Dineo, the driver helped us with a pharmacy and optician in a very proactive, professional and persistent way. She’s a gem.

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to write a review!
I am glad your feelings flipped for the better. :)
Just to add to your comments. Our dining areas are sufficient in size for our 11 suites and seat 30 patrons comfortably.
The gray carpet is just that, grey with a speckle as part of the interior design. The tacky thing, you must have gotten from the deliberately distressed look as an interior design feature achieved by a specialized paint technic.
Dineo is always happy to be of service and will help wherever she can.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and wish you many more happy travels.
Best, the team at ARH.

Lovely small hotel with great service. The gardens make you feel a million miles away, the open fire takes the chill off in the evening.
Very well decorated with some original art works
Would definitely stay again thank you.

We only stayed for one night as a stop over but again a very good hotel.

If you want to feel like you "have arrived in Africa", instead of staying at the run-of-the-mill international chain hotels near the airport, you should consider African Rock. The hotel is small and quiet with a personable and professional staff. They have an excellent chef- the highlight for me on our stay was springbok carpaccio and excellent beef fillet. The rooms are luxurious with heated bathroom floors and towel rails. The photos by other reviewers are accurate. And they offer free transfers to/from the airport - about 20-minute drive each way. This was my 3rd stay and I look forward to returning.

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Part of our itinerary include spending one night at the ARH on our inbound journey and one night on our outbound journey. The ARH is an absolutely first class hotel which offers amazing facilities, customer service and food all provided by very efficient and extremely friendly staff. The service starts with an airport meet & greet and transport to the hotel. Our respective drivers were very good and nothing was too much trouble for them. We were allocated the same room on both our separate stays and it was superb. We had three meals on each of the days we stayed at the hotel the quality of all of them was amazing prepared by knowledgeable chefs. On our first stay we had Springbok for our mains and it was awesome and there is no wonder Lions like it!
My wife and I also took time to use the hotel's Spa and she commented that her facial treatment was the best she has ever experienced. My massage was also very good and relieved and took away the strains and aches from our long flight getting to South Africa.
This trip was going to be once in a lifetime but we loved it so much that we are planning to return next year and we will definitely be calling in at the African Rock Hotel again!
