“Quirky find”

Bread & Roses Cafe and Bistro
Ranked #53 of 1 289 Restaurants in Johannesburg
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$3 - US$6
Description: Bread & Roses is cafe and a bistro. The owners are a couple who live in Melville, so 100% from the “hood”, although Julia is French and Ishmael is from Zimbabwe! Everything is homemade and cooked on order. We bake our own bread and deserts. Our moto is simple, fresh, delicious! The menue changes with the seasons and offers lots of healthy and vegetarian options. We have become popular for our “unusual breakfasts” such as the Spicy Egg Frittata with Chorizo and Pancetta, the Salmon Potato Cakes, or the Decadent Eggs Juliette. We offer a selection freshly squeezed juices. We have a short, but interesting and very well priced wine list! Come check us out!

Delicious cappuccino and one of the best Caesar salads I've ever had. Made with the proper ingredients unlike many other places. Friendly service. Comfy seating. Oh, and one of the nicest ladies loos around Jhb....!!

I totally dig this place. A great relaxed vibe with loads of beautiful African fabrics covering the benches and chairs - and lots of light and space. Whether a weekend brunch with friends or cappucinos while enjoying the weekday laptop friendly space, it's a wonderful place to enjoy the yummy food and people watch.

Friendly inviting atmosphere. We walked in from a cold morning to find a warm fire going and even warmer smiles. We enjoyed a veggie omelette and a salmon omelette (which was a little dry). Good coffee is always a must! I will be back!

Good coffee, friendly service and a great breakfast. I've since stopped by for a peaceful afternoon coffee and discovered the baked cheesecake. It's the best I've had in a while in the Joburg cafe scene - but take a friend because it's a large portion.

The space lacks any atmosphere. We booked a table for 4 pax for a birthday and when we arrived, the assigned table was the one closest to the toilet passage. Much better tables were available. No music playing - so had a dead echoing ambiance. The waitress seemed confused about our drinks order and wondered back and forth to and from the table. Drinks took a while. My jasmin green tea, was a teabag in a pot. Definitely not proper jasmin green tea. We had to ask for butter for the bread 4 or 5 times. Breakfast arrived -the salmon potato cake - not good. The potato cake was extremely overcooked and too dark in colour - no flavour. My salmon and cream cheese omelette, over salted and over cooked. The omelette was rubbery. On the upside, the bread was good.
