Hudsons on Fourth Avenue, Parkhurst is hamburger joint (with a few salads, grills and pizzas thrown in) where Investec-bankers go to be seen. I am sure that there are a few Investec-banker-wannabes hidden amongst the crowd as well but you would have to lip-read their conversation to distinguish them from the real McCoy. The heavy-metal music is really loud and one doesn’t go to Hudsons to conclude negotiations on a deal valued at over R100 but, rather, to discuss how your week went, which deals over R100 you did close and which deals over R100 you might have lost. The variety of hamburgers is extensive and they all taste phenomenal but they’re by no means healthy, despite having a few healthier alternatives. However, having sampled a few items off their menu now, their slow-fast food is really good after a long day negotiating deals at Investec Bank. Hudsons is an import-brand from Cape Town (where Investec-bankers go on holiday) and offers the closest thing (that I have seen) to a New York vibe in the parks. Even the waitrons – who are all students paying their way through university so that they can qualify to work for Investec Bank – offer a dynamic edge to table-waiting. Most patrons go in groups of about six and peak-traffic hour (most evenings and weekend lunch-times) sees the need for a booking. It occurs to me that Hudsons (011 268 0713) could be an ideal place (2.5 kms from Victory Park) for a yuppie first date because it would easy to take a fake emergency call and even slip out into the street for a quick getaway. And, it’s easy to watch the Proteas (finally) doing well if you happen to run out of conversation. Food: 3/5. Service: 4/5. Conference facilities: 0/5. Cricket on day 2 of 3rd test: 5/5.
