“Powerful tour”
Reviewed 15 November 2016 via mobile

My husband and I had a day in Jo'burg and decided to do a tour of Soweto. We read the great reviews about Mandy and booked with her for an afternoon private tour. Mandy showed us all the.major sites and we also were able to walk through Kliptown with a young guy who lives there. Mandy was great to talk to and we spent a lot of time talking about all sorts of things !

“Mandy's Imbizo Tours were great--especially Soweto”
Reviewed 6 November 2016

Mandy's tour of Soweto, her home town, was excellent. I especially liked that she took us to Kliptown and had arranged for locals there to walk the streets with us to answer our questions and to introduce us to other residents. The personal connections were memorable.

“Recommend!”

We had a great experience with Imbizo tours which booked Sibati (a freelancer whose day job is teaching in high school at Soweto) as our guide. We did it super last minute - morning of and were happy they were able to accommodate us. Sibati was super fun and interesting - we talked about everything from higher education to the importance of sex ed, women's rights, HIV/ AIDs, politics, you name it. Sibati was so knowledgeable and it was great to get the perspective of someone working so closely with the younger generation in Soweto.
We took a drive around the different neighborhoods in Soweto (which is HUGE), took at look and discussed several monuments and ended the day at a super lively shebeen / (can you even call it a shebeen? it was just a super fun bar/ restaurant where locals, including those from outside Soweto, come for a nice time).

“A life-changing experience, not to miss when visiting SA!”
Reviewed 3 October 2016

After some online research we booked a private half-day tour with Mandy. Even though it was the most expensive tourist attraction we had done during our intense weeklong visit to the country it was by far the most enriching one.

In the morning, Mandy patiently waited for us (we reached the Gautrain station almost one hour late) and took us in her car to the townships. Already on the way there we had an open and sincere conversation with Mandy about our life, goals, dreams, relationships... She amazed us with incredible accurate readings and greatly valuable feedback. First, we were driven around various areas of Soweto, listening to stories about various linked to the Apartheid events. Afterwords we reached Kliptown, where we went for a short walk to see the main monument and the market square. Then Mandy left us in the hands of a local who took us inside his community, there we could see how only with a few water taps and no electricity three thousand people could live cramped into an area of a few hundred square meters.

At that time of the tour we have already realised what an incredible personality Mandy was and how much work she has done for the communities of Soweto. The really nice man who took us around was actually rescued and then taken care by her when he was orphaned at the age of eleven. The most unique experience however was when Mandy drove us to Hector Pieterson Museum and shared with us her personal stories about how she took part in the protests, was multiple times shot and detained throughout the years of her youth.

In the end we went through a short tour through Mandela's house, where we were again impressed by Mandy and her strong reaction to the fact that the majority of the guides there were white and not from Soweto (while around the building so many locals are struggling to find a job).

The whole experience was incredible, we would have never understood the past and current complex situation of Soweto, if we would have gone for a simple group tour. We are very thankful to Imbizo Tours for giving us this amazing experience! Even though the tour lasted only 5 hours we still remain in touch with Mandy, sharing our thoughts and experiences by email.

“Eye opening tour”
Reviewed 11 September 2016

Mandy provides a great tour of her home town and takes you beyond the well known sights of Soweto. There were 2 doctors and a nurse in our group so she took us into the emergency waiting room of the huge hospital so they could compare it to their hospital in France.
None of us knew there were upper and middle class areas to Soweto, even a country club. We saw these as well as the shanties of Kliptown with a young man who lives there.
Be prepared to discuss the politics of your country with Mandy. She is very well informed and has very strong opinions. Definitely a tour for people who want something different.
